Passing on a question from a friend of mine...

He works in medical rescue (extracting patients from extreem scenarios, mountains, RTAs, etc) and has a V8 defender modified into an ambulance. He was wondering how easy it is to put a 200/300tdi engine into it? and what the approx cost would be?

I have no idea other than how much a second hand engine costs.

Any feed back much appreciated

Dave

My mates done it. I think he said that the 200tdi from a disco fits the same gearbox as the V8 so should be fairly simple. The only snag he had apparently was that the engine sat too far back, so the exhaust down pipe, fouled the footwell. I can't remember how he overcame that. Either rerouting the exhaust or different engine mounts but I can't be sure. I will ask him next time I see him.

I know the output shafts are different lengths so that makes sense.

Thanks for the info, esp if he can use the gear box. Donor vehicle has an automatic box i think

if you have a v8 ,the engine and transmission fit further forward than 200tdi or previous defenders, and the same as 300tdi youd be best getting a 300tdi from a disco with box and fitting ashcroft adapter to box to take defender gear box top, exhaust pipes etc would all be std def parts

Ta very much james. Think the donor is a 200 tdi but i'll pass on the info.

To be honest I told him to keep the V8 its only done 35k

you can fit anything its just the amount of modifying you have to do and non std parts ,300tdi with sitting in the same place as v8 is obvious choice

Ah, sorry for the misinformation. Spoke to him last night and he had the 2.5 petrol engine originally fitted and not the V8.
