V6 auto to manual ??

I’ve got a project in mind over the next few months to get ahead as there’s a few catching up with me. Let’s just say blue it getting a major rework. Launching a load of exhausts so it’ll be promoting them. Looking at 200bhp and if I can manual V6. Gotta get back in LRO.

A member on here did have a V6 manual. I believe it used an L series box with a converter plate between the box and engine bell. There's some pics on here somewhere too. ;)

L series would be wrong final drive unless he swapped that. The L series box is the beefed up one so it makes sense from that respect. Got L&k boxes sat around so easily see if they fit.

The KV6 has more than enough torque to pull the L series box. Especially if used with the L series IRD. The V6 FL1 has a higher ratio IRD to give a nice low Rpm cruising speed.

No FL1 box fits the KV6 straight off. However the MG ZS180 box is a straight fit. I did look at machining the box to take an IRD and fit the FL1 diff cage replacement. However I never got past the investigation stage on the project.

So I’ve been misled on the pg1 front. The zs has its own bell housing. Damn it

Can't the gubbins out of a Rover 220 Tomcat's box be used for gearing? I have no idea on the setup inside them and appreciate there's a diff in the Tomcat's box so it might be no good - but its good for the T Series 150hp (just!).

Internals all swap over. It’s the bell housing that’s the problem. More googling. It appears that the v6 is the same bolt pattern as the T16 which is different to the K so adaptor plate needed if 4wd is being kept. I have a plan on that one. No idea if it’ll work but considering I’ll have all the bits sat on the floor it’s fairly easy to experiment.

An adapter plate is the easiest route to take.
When I was looking at this, I did think it was possible to machine the ZS180 PG1 box bell side, so it could take an IRD. Some of the casting blanks are on the box, so just need drilling and tapping to carry the IRD mount.

I am really glad you're going for the 4WD option here. 200bhp from the KV6 should be reasonably straightforward too (the standard exhaust manifold design is pretty restrictive).

Really looking forward to seeing this project develop! :D

Interesting read folks, although having had a loan of my dads manual freelander while my auto one was sick, I'm sold on the auto so don;t know why anyone'd want to convert it? That being said I'd love to see the build diary of someone building something like that which has been discussed herein.

That's an understatement .

When you look at the standard exhaust manifold, it's a wonder the KV6 makes the power it does. The collector is a hideous design that is geared to price rather than performance.

The KV6 will make a solid 200 Bhp with breathing mods and a small mapping tweak. ;)
