Hi, I dived in and bought a V6 a couple of week back and am most impressed. However, given that I'm new to the Freelander, and automatic gearboxes in general, I have one question - when going into drive or reverse it sometimes goes with a bump, most of the time it goes in nice and smooth but I'd say 20% of the time I get the bump, is this typical? (BTW, I do tend to stick it in neutral quite a bit as recommended by the manual).

Any comments gratefully received.

Cheers.

Hi LAndyB,
I got a V6 auto and have to confess I don't get a bump when selecting any gear, not that I remember anyway. How many miles has the vehicle covered? You may want to check the oil level in the gearbox too, diferent to engine oil. I think you have to remove an overflow plug and then add gearbox oil in another hole until oil floods out over your drive.

Thanks for the quick reply Mark. It's done 40k so I'd have thought all should be ok, but you can never be sure. It's from a main dealer so I reckon it's worth a call to check it out. I'd be interested to see if any others are the same mind. Cheers.

Yes as the Marksurry Say's ,check the oil level in your auto box s its important to do this at the correct temperature , and if you do it yourself ,make sure you follow instructions, use the correct oil ,and make sure that the said vehicle is as near as dam it level, feel sure this is your problem at least its the first step, bye the bee there is a very good mod for any freelander who off road to do with the gear box , if your interested earthings pester me and i will reveal. . . the really real ming :)

Ming, ruler of the universe, may I bother you for the gearbox mod? I know there's a mod for the breather pipe. Having a breather pipe facing forward just over the gearbox seems crazy. My Hippo is going off road mid 2006. A trip to Snowdonia in Wales for some all day green laning :)

Hi LAndyB,
This happened to me last week a day before it went in for its 60k service. It was diagnosed as a transmission speed sensor not working. Quoted like £15 for part but over £300 labour as the gear box needs to be taken apart. Will be taking it to another garage I know once Ive cleared the c/c bill for the service !! Ta. ...Nick
