Hello Compo!

Chances are it will be a sensor, but as far as i am aware these are replacable, Think harvester just had one done on his box,
As for em being "sealed for life", there only sealed till they bust,
Might be worth a visit to a gearbox specialist if you aint happy with the price they give you

Hi all,

mondo is right, the boxes are "sealed for life" but boxes are like people, some grow old and others don't....:D :D so the sealing is ok as long as the box doesn't fail.

you'll probably find that the ATF will be a burnt/brown colour, if it is then change the ATF, these jatco boxes run very hot and its not uncommon for them to burn out at low mileages (around 30,000) especially when towing.
Use the rave attatchment that is on this thread to check the level, it is important that the oil level is spot on and checked/topped up at the correct temperature as it will cause problems.

Sensors don't normally go wrong but there is a bulliten on speed sensor failure caused by the wiring not sealed properly, if the speed sensor goes faulty you'll have F4 displayed on the dash where the gear selection normally is.

Ok ya earthlings if you feel you need ta change the oil in yer auto box [jatco only] and this would be the same for MHM v6 follow a old thread go into search and type,td4 or auto box oil change ,this should give ya the help that your gonna need, however i must add  that i ranted on about modding the under cowling, well stupid me got it wrong, you can undo the cowling, only my mod makes it so much better [but thats just my opinion] anyhow i'm really pleased that i did the job as i noticed the auto box seemed a lot more responsive and smoother ,so best oh luck. . . .:)

oil level plug is underneath next to the selector cable, it'll be either a 5mm allen key (early models) or a 14mm spanner (late models), the level is critical and must be checked at around 40 degrees with the engine running and selector in neutral, when you take out the plug you should have a thin thread of oil coming out. the filler is on the front of the box on top of the valve block cover (black cover on the front of the box), its a bit tricky to get to though.

the problem is more likely down to the oil being burnt (brown in colour and smells burnt). if its burnt, change the ATF, the drain plug is a 22mm bolt underneath, dont remove any other plugs or you'll wreck the gearbox

Doing fine me old china :D How's about you?
Looking forward to this off road trip next Spring. Will be a great weekend/week I reckon. Wish I had the Freelander still. Toying with buying one just for France ;)
