Hi My 2002 V6 Freelander Auto box is playing up... The car has done only 27,000 miles - In the last few days the change up an down the box has become very jerky  ... worse in the lower gears and doesn't matter how hard to are accelerating - So anyone had this problem before or can thgink of something I can do to return it to it's normal smooth self again?

I aint even looked mate, But i do know that there's a few plugs around the oil level one that look similar,Undoing the wrong one can totally bugger the box ,So dont go chargin in there!!!!!
Ming's probly yer man to put yer right,He should be about later,
If Mrs Ming finished wiv him!!!

It all started when the car was parked for a couple of hours on a steep hill last Friday - Hasn't been right since...Thanks for your help so far.

Hi matey don't panic just yet and be very careful what you play with the filler is through a pull up plastic pipe it’s on the top rhs of box where you can't see it but it is there. there is no level plug Heinz manual says it’s on the very bottom of the box next to the selector cable but when you open this it just dumps the fluid. on the back side of the box half way up is a 17 or 19mm bolt looks like a level plug please don’t touch it you’ll loose reverse even if you move it. The best thing to do is find the filler and add some. Hopefully there won't be so much stuff in the way as there is on the td4. if you want to replace the fluid drain through prv mentioned plug in base of box catch and measure what comes out then refill with the same amount...hope you don’t lose the box like I did mine went at 128,000 miles I think you said yours has 27k on it there should be a fair amount of life in it yet matey...Hope you're lucky chap...By the way it’s a jatco box...let us know how it goes...

Hi compomotive, check an old thread in search called td4 or aoto box oil change, that should help yer,and yes first thing is to check youve got the exact amount, best oh luck. . .:)

OK so if it is the oil level - how easy is this to check - top up ?
Ok matey I was replying to this part of your text not sure if fluid or not, but I was saying if you are to check it go carefull there are pitfalls as metioned. not sure with yours. I've noticed mine is a little notchy when cold but I'ts fine after about 5 mins. mine changes and stays in 5th @ about 42-43 mph but mines a td4...marksurry had a v6 auto he'll get back to you later I'm sure, if not hang in there someone will along later to help you I'm sure...good luck feller...cartman690...

p.s. are you getting any slip i.e. changing gear revs rise higher than normal then come back down again? also when you say notchy do you mean a jerk when it changes, or like a knock or clunk that could be on the drive chain???

My V6 auto box had trouble like that once. I topped the oil up and it sorted it out.
As said in earlier replies it could also be a speed sensor in the gear box.
Expensive parts those auto boxes :(

Ok thanks for the information... I have been told that car needs to be plugged into a diagnostic machine to tell what is going on inside the box...The local Land Rover chaps tell me that the box is a sealed for life system that only needs an oil change at 96,000 miles - If no visible leeks then the oil cannot be missing.
They say that it is more likley to be an electrical problem...

Hello Compo!

Chances are it will be a sensor, but as far as i am aware these are replacable, Think harvester just had one done on his box,
As for em being "sealed for life", there only sealed till they bust,
Might be worth a visit to a gearbox specialist if you aint happy with the price they give you

Thanks for your help on this... I have booked the car into a Land Rover repair shop to check it over on Thursday of this week... As soon as I have more details I will post the details on this link...
