:D yep as JM states thats the oil feed to the head :D
You need to check the gasket next to the first "mickey mouse" cutout for the identifing hole/holes - not a great pic but it does look like a "no hole" gasket which is the thickest you can get ;)

Piston protrusion is how far the pistons stick up above the top of the block. If ya gasket aint the right thicness the piston will hit summat.;)
 
Bob - don't worry about that - concentrate on idetifying the corrrect thickness of gasket to use to replace the head - and it will all be fine mate ;)

(just use an ELRING gasket!! They even come with bolt tightening sequence and torque figures and angles - :) )

The engine is factory fit and this is the second time the head has been off in its life both times by me.the head has been skimmed once so as im not a racing driver a good thick gasket makes my life easy...:D

will this hole punch kit work on composite gaskets?

head gasket thickness is as said already governed by piston protrusion ,and if head has been skimmed,3 hole gasket does most people but does depend on how much was skimmed off

I cant remember how much was skimmed,mick did it.I did have to reface a valve he pulled out but it was very slight the rest polished up nice throughout,valve seals were good on test and i do remember him saying it wasnt that bad ..

i was well busy stripping down a fukin alfa head that day..:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

so just rekon ill get the elring thick gasket and be done,

If you skim the head you do not need to adjust gasket thickness. Only if you skim the deck.

Get an elring gasket. You have FOUR choices

1, 2, 3 hole and then a NO HOLE gasket which is the thickest.

So if you can't be bothered or do not have an accurate measuring device to gauge your engines piston protrusion just get a no hole elring gasket. There would be close to no difference in compression if you took off a 1 hole and replaced it with the thickest no hole gasket.
