Using as a van

Hi All- I am a gardener and currently have a partner van. I`m hoping to satisfy my hankering for a disco and work requirements at the same time by combining the two. Anybody used/using a disco for this or similar? I`m gonna need space for usual- mower, hedge cutters, strimmer (all petrol), hand tools, steps etc. How hard is it to remove swing away seats if required or even rear seats themselves? Is roof high enough for mower without collapsing handle, height of loading lip etc , that kind of thing. Cheers Gary.

Have you thought about a discovery 3 commercial vehicle? Its a disco 2 with two seats. The back has a ply deck and a load guard. Looks like a standard disco3 from outside.

Oh, I`ve thought about `em alright. Lusted even. However, my budget is about £1700!

I have to fold down the handle on my Mountfield mower to get it in!

Better with a small trailer for all your stuff

See that`s what I wanted to avoid- leaving gear on show in a trailer while working or popping into supermarket for rest stop (****).

If you remove the rear seats completely (Leave in the dicky seats) and ply line the floor you get a load area of about 5ft deep & 4ft high. Plus space under the plywood deck, that;s ideal for hiding chainsaws etc. Tint the rear windows with limo tint. etc and you'll have similar load area to a partner van.

If your budget is tight Id think twice about an 4x4 for a work vehicle, unless you need a 4x4 and if someone else is paying the bills!

I love my D2 Commercial, it ticked my boxes but its not a cheap car/van to run, Ive needed 4x4 for some of the sites I visit and I use the full load space, its also done over 5000 miles since I got it and all good so far, so its certainly working for its living.

Mine cost £3750 but it needed bits a peices sorting and I also allowed for a new gearbox/transfer box as I knew they were on the way out, so thats another £1.5K from Ashcrofts next week.

If your starting budget is very low its a gamble especially for a car thats got to work, the first time it lets you down will cost you money in lost earnings as well as repairs.

Personally I advise short term renting/leasing a van or 4x4 for when you need the extra load space.

But still get a Disco for fun of course!
