Hi folks,
Bit of a long shot, but does anyone know where I could buy used/refurbished Freelander parts? I'm in France, and my local garage is quoting a small fortune (€ 2,000) for a replacement intermediate reduction drive...
Any help gratefully received...

Hi,

Which engine, year, milleage ? If the IRD breaks it generaly because of wrong tires, prop shaft in very bad condition, a VCU that is too stiff.

Ebay, you’ll find all what you want.
Also you can go and ask an other garage.
What are the symptoms ?

To remove the IRD you need to flush the IRD oil, flush the coollant, disconnect one drive shaft, and disconnect the prop shaft.

You need to be sure that the replacement IRD is in good condition before putting It back. Also all IRD don’t have the same ratio.

Why do you need to replace the IRD ? The rest of the transmission need to be in good condition before changing anything.

Regards.

Hi,
Thanks so much for your reply - much appreciated. My TD4 Freelander is a 2003 2 door model, with only 90,000 miles on the clock. I had a new VCU fitted last year ,and all seemed to be well. Recently, there's been a strange growling noise coming from the front end whenever I change down from 3rd to 2nd and take my foot off the accelerator. The only reason I think I need a new IRD unit, is because that's what my local (French) mechanic told me after checking it out. Just about every youtube video I've looked at, talks about crunching noises as an indication of a broken IRD unit - nothing like the throaty grumble I'm hearing...
The tyres are in excellent condition and the car is regularly serviced, So I'm wondering whether there's something else I should be checking - like worn bushes, causing the engine to vibrate, before ordering a new IRD unit to be shipped over to France...
