updated crankcase breather

hi

just a quick one to ask about what the updated crankcase breather is and where to get one and what the crankcase breather actually does. Not got much of a clue about engines.

I have just bought one and fitted, seems like an updated part from BMW.

It lets the engine breath, The normal one with the bog roll type filter gets blocked causing presure build up in the sump, I`ve read it can blow turbo seals and make the running of the engine sluggish.
 
In normal operation the crankcase would pressurise without some form of ventilation to the air. However if allowed to go straight to the atmosphere it would release engine oil as a mist. The crankcase breather is to separate out the oil but allow the pressure to normalise.
The Td4 being a BMW engine has had a modified breather on their spec which works better and not being based on filter material don't tend to block. It is therefore available from BMW suppliers as LR has not issued it.

Hi, I posted the original picture, this is a result of running the engine with a blocked filter and then removing the oil dip stick to check the oil, just remember to never check your oil with the engine running. :doh:

if people didn't realize this is a very easy part to fit, and requires little mechanical knowledge, just patience.

To fit -
take off the plastic engine cover,
remove the injector wiring and piping,
the cranckcase cover will be in the middle behind the injectors,
remove the 5 or 6 bolts, these will either be Torx or allen (this is where you need the patience as some bolts are hard to get to)
take off the cover and remove the old LR part,
replace with the cyclonic breather and rubber gaskets (if you have them)
then follow in reverse to put back together.

any recommendations on where to buy one from? or is it a BMW only part?

Do you have to replace the plastic outer case to or can you buy the filter part seperate?
 
Thanks to you guys and this thread I got the BMW part too from Ebay. It looks do-able for someone with little mechanical knowledge. :rolleyes:

Does anyone please know on this part (or any other) how we find out the torque settings to do the bolts back up at or even better any instructions?

I have to rely on friendly people here who must have a special manual that's a bit more advanced than the Haynes book, but I hate to ask as it's hassle for other people.

I tried to download something called Microcat 2009 but it won't work on Windows 7 . :(
 
I just tighten then by hand and feel, if you just use a screw driver with a torx bit, and hand tighten as much as you can you`ll be fine. If you need torque setting you can download Rave on cd, or tighten to 8Nm as rave says.

I always tighten as much as I can, But I have been know to tighten too much, to my peril.... I and now getting a feel as to when things will break.
 
Yes, just tighten by hand but enough to have the two gaskets squeezed between the head and the filtercover.
