Dear All,

Currently attempting to drive a rust bucket of a 1992 Defender 110 from the UK to Cape Town.

We had problems in the UK before departure (front output shaft barings on the transfer box went, requiring installation of a working second hand transfer box). Also we changed the alloy wheels to steel wheels.

Set off, and noticed a wobble/vibration. Seems to be worse at the back, probably rear left, only there when driving at speeds over 60mph (definitely worse 65 – 70mph),
Not affected by drive (i.e. not on pick up of drive), not worse with steering.

Only things that were different since pre wobble are the wheels and installation of a new (second hand) transfer box (so the rear prop shaft came off, and the front unbolted from the Tx box).

I have had the wheels balanced, swapped the rear wheels for the front ones, and swapped the two spare wheels on and off. Have also tightened rear left and front left wheel barings, and inspected rear left half shaft (some wear on near splines, but ok). Have had rear drive shaft off (although this has two new UJs in and no play in the splines) and driven in 2WD, wobble still there. I can’t find any play/obvious failure in any of the bushes/suspension components at the back. Exhaust is sound.

On my to-do list is:
- Remove front drive shaft and drive on the rear one
- Tighten rear right wheel baring (although no play)
- Inspect rear right half shaft
- Drain Salisbury diff and inspect fluid

I’m a bit stumped and any advice would be appreciated. Trying to do this whilst driving (slowly) around Serbia is challenging!

Many thanks as ever,

Rich

Don't think it was split, the rear shaft came off completely and the front off at the transfer box but not at the front. I'll double check the yokes. Thanks for the reply! :)
