Has the car had a replacement diff since new?
Thankyou ...., I’m so scared it’s gojng to just go bang ..... it’s just recently this noise anHow are the tyres? Some designs of tyre can "step" over many thousands of miles which causes a droning sound. Our Ford Kuga is suffering this at the moment, it's most noticeable between 30 and 50 Mph. So check the tyres and go from there.
Rear diff bearings
Am I safe to drive it ..... got a 100 mike journey home ....also is it an expensive job ... thanks for your adviceRear diff bearings
There are some things where the forum can give a definitive answer as to whether it is safe or isn't safe to drive a car - I don't think this is one of them.Am I safe to drive it
If it is the rear diff, I'd be calling Bell Engineering, they're great with F1 transmissions and do replacement F2 diffs. Here's there 'symptoms' page...is it an expensive job
Thankyou all for your advice .... I’m on holiday in wales and will drive home to Sheffield where I will get it checked .... unfortunately I dt live near to Bell Engineering .... so will look for someone near to homeThere are some things where the forum can give a definitive answer as to whether it is safe or isn't safe to drive a car - I don't think this is one of them.
It is difficult to diagnose a problem from a description of a droning noise that "seems to get so noisy above 50 mph" - what may be noisy to you may be a quiet to others or you may be understating it. If the 100 miles is to get home to a dieing relative, I'd wing it, if its to go to the pub, I'd get some cans in till I'd found out what the problem is.
It could just be tyre noise, diff bearings (F2 up to about 2010 have notoriously poor rear diffs), wheel bearing, brake issue and possibly other reasons.
If it has been making a noise for a while and suddenly got a lot worse, I'd be very cautious of using the vehicle.
Don't know what others think.

Tharnkyou .... I’m in the RAC and got full cover .... I’ll take your adviceIt won't go bang as it's a bearing that's faulty, it'll just get louder until you get to the point where you think I shouldn't be driving this anymore. I would get recovery to be honest.
Sod that just drive it home if it goes bang then call them out. You dont go into A&E becasue you think you might get sick next yearTharnkyou .... I’m in the RAC and got full cover .... I’ll take your advice
Maybe I’m sexist..... but I wish I had a male .... driver with me ..... I’m just a man with her grandchildren ........ and people probably thinking ..... if you dt know owt about the car .....dt have it !Sod that just drive it home if it goes bang then call them out. So long as it doesn't sound like immediate impending doom, I think I'd be inclined to do the same, recovery from Wales to Sheffield in the middle of school holidays does not sound like fun.Sod that just drive it home if it goes bang then call them out. Thanks ..... you any idea of the cost ?? Are we talking £100 or £500 plus ?So long as it doesn't sound like immediate impending doom, I think I'd be inclined to do the same, recovery from Wales to Sheffield in the middle of school holidays does not sound like fun.
Think I'd drive it via Worcestershire to get a new diff on the way home! Austen at Bell Engineering will be able to say if its the diff or not.
It should say a nan nan with her grandchildren ...Maybe I’m sexist..... but I wish I had a male .... driver with me ..... I’m just a man with her grandchildren ........ and people probably thinking ..... if you dt know owt about the car .....dt have it !
I did wonder. In this day and age the original may have been true.It should say a nan nan with her grandchildren ...
Of the 3 options, "plus" is the correct answer! Fitted it may cost you as much as £700 depending on how friendly you speak to Austen and whether you can claim the VAT back. I'm sure he won't sell you one if you don't need it though - but you have to have the car there for him to know that. The costs are here...Thanks ..... you any idea of the cost ?? OMG I need a bank loan then .....I did wonder. In this day and age the original may have been true.

You may be needing a reconditioned rear differential. As I say, it may be a wheel bearing or something that will cost less.
Owning any Land Rover you will need deep pockets to keep them maintained even if you do all the work yourself.OMG I need a bank loan then .....
I’m going to ring the local LR garage in Llandudno .... near where I’m staying on holiday....... here goes ......Owning any Land Rover you will need deep pockets to keep them maintained even if you do all the work yourself.
