Undertray issue

So I got myself a 2005 facelift freelander 1. Bags of fun and just right for the day to day stuff plus the more adventuresome travel I do with it. I've been slowly bringing her back up to scratch. Mainly facelift stuff (refurbishing the interior, adding usb power offs, dumping the sub-woofer and gaining some useful storage space - that sort of thing) but there is one job that I'm struggling with.

The car didn't have a sump guard when I got it but since I do some light off roading I got hold of one - and it doesn't fit. Now I've had a pre-facelift freelander before and I use to take the damn thing on and off on a regular basis when I did oil changes but now...the sump has me stumped!

Did they change the design? Or do I need to mod the (admitedly pre-facelift) guard I have to now fit the facelifted model?

Its still very early here, 5:30AM, but I was looking forward to today, got a beer festival to go to and I was happy.

Then you remind me that I have an undertray to refit this weekend! Oh dear, maybe next weekend will be better.



Can't answer your question sorry, but I do believe they are different.
 
Looking at the Rimmer Bros part catalogue, just one part number seems to over the undertray - KRB500020 - and this applies for all cars?

Ratae, part LSB102040 is for the sump by the looks of things.

That's different to my '99 under tray. Mine has 4 (holes for) mounting bolts at the front plus 2 screws to the valance and doesn't have those black 'wings' at the front either. The main part is all plastic as well - no metal sheet down the middle.
 
I believe there are different versions as when I purchased one for my 2006 TD4 about 4 years ago, I was asked for specific vehicle details as there was more than one version.
This was from an online scrappy.
 
The one pictured looks exactly like mine. The centre metal bit may be a 1.8i version, as I believe this may be a heat shield against the exhaust. The plastic bit actually is all plastic - that metal section is only pop-riveted onto that plastic...

Pretty sure the one that came off my '01 car also had the same under tray as my '99.

The AllBrit page shows lots of part numbers...

I'm sure lots of those part numbers are basically the same interchangeable unit - googling the early ones gets nothing much of a response indicating as such (ie they can't be bought under those old numbers).

Not sure if their database includes the facelift.

I just compared my '99 diesel to the '01 1.8 parts car - lol I remember then as the same but as you say they are different. The 1.8 does have the heat shield running down the middle of the plastic. The '01 does only have just the 2 mounting bolts - but it doesn't have those 'wings' at the front and there's no sign of it ever having had them.

Those 2 part numbers quoted from lrcat look to be for petrol and diesel and quoted as from 96 to 06.

Maybe they just did away with the extra 2 bolts as they were not needed and just created extra work for fitting and removal - the 2 that have been removed you can't get a socket on and have to use a spanner and are therefore time consuming compared to the remaining 2 - plus the remaining 2 are used for the A Bar as well when fitted.

Not sure what those 'wings' are though. I wouldn't mind betting they are only needed for the facelift.
 
All three of the facelifted TD4s that I've had have the "wings". I think they're just for looks as they're really flimsy and also make getting the undertray off even more of a PITA. All of mine have been in a crap state because the mild steel screws that fasten them to the bumper rust in place and you just end up ripping them off when you want to remove the undertray. It doesn't matter a bit if they're not fitted.

I do quite a bit of driving on gravel roads/tracks - especially this time of year chasing Salmon!

I feel the under tray offers 'some' protection from any stones thrown up and the large amounts of dust. Its probably not much on account of it being plastic and the engine being in front of the wheels anyway, but I feel more comfortable driving with it on.

The actual frame is very sturdy. The plastic sections are, well, plastic:eek:. They'll allow some sliding on mud, but won't protect against rocks and other high load impacts.

Yeh I wouldn't expect it to offer much protection at all but might deflect a stone thrown up from the gravel road/track away from an area where it might cause trouble.

Well I have just put mine back on - full compliment again of 10 bolts and 2 screws. After 8 years of ownership I'm getting a bit better with it these days - but its still a PITA! Temperature though is nudging 30 and I'm leaking!

Beer festival was very enjoyable. Some decent beers, some not so! Some decent music, some not so!

And that's my problem then! The one I have is the old style jobbie with the additional two forks/prongs at the front.

And with the redesigned front end it's why it's proving a bigger PITA than usual.
