What a sad state of affairs indeed. I bought the exact same model, S reg for about 7 K nearly four years ago. Is the 4 x 4 market likely to go back up again?
No, but just think, yours'll still be worth something in ten years time. You could of spent that amount on plenty of cars four years ago and be thinking of scrapping them by now. And remember, it may be a bit old but it's essentially a £30,000 car in replacement terms! Just think of it as a longterm investment and enjoy.:)

I see my thread has degenerated a little! I might have my neighbour interested in this car but if he wanted to buy it I would want to sort out the noisey tensioner for him. How can I tell what engine I have? Am I right in thinking there are a few types (200TDI, 300TDI, TD5)?

I have seen bearing kits on ebay for just a few quid - are these worthwhile or should I just buy a new tensioner? Cheers in advance.

Ebay link

"Your" Disco is a 300TDi.

I've bought stuff from the eBay seller you have posted that link to, and he's reliable and sells good products, so I would have thought his solution will work.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be getting my hands dirty this weekend!

Hi Voicy, at little tip for you re the noisy tensioner.

I did this tip on my vehicle last December is it's still as quiet as the proverbial.

"The Penny trick": takes about 5 mins to do and usually quietens most Tdi 300 squeals:

1. Tension the idler so you can remove the belt, then release tension;

2. Slacken the fixing bolt that holds the idler assembly to the engine block
then slide a penny between the block and the assembly at the 9 'o clock position (not at 9 'o clock at night, as one wag suggested !!) and retighten the fixing bolt;

3.Re assemble the belt and fire her up, hopefully the noise will be gone

Cheers & good luck, any questions just pm me,

Dave

That is very interesting. Does that mean that it is not the bearing making the noise then?

That's a very interesting question Voicey, and one that has several different answers which I will not go into now.

Suffice it to say that I had a noisy tensioner when I bought my car, so I thought I'll buy a new one - about £50.

While it was in transit to me in France I read about and tried the Penny Trick. It worked for me, that was 9 months ago and is still working.

Yesterday, just out of interest, I took the penny out and the Canary returned.

So, there are a number of theories why this works/couldn't work, but for me it does, try it and see if it works for you - and can do no harm after all.

Cheers
Dave
