UK touring with a Landy (But which one)?

Hey guys new member here, I've had look at the threads that already pertain to my question but I wonder if you have a moment a quick nod to one or the other as I am split between a second had Freelander and Disco when the wife and I visit the UK next year.

Were going to throw a roof top tent on and awning, with a few camping gear items and slowly tour for a few months with the occasional B&B thrown into the mix.

I'm obviously thinking things like Price - resale - fuel cost - space -reliability etc ....

Any nods or advice would help out with our decision

Friends disco. Still has 4 seats but removed the small seats in rear.large fridge with freeze compartment. Side awning
reason tent is in a hard shell so don’t rip while green laning.

Just remember you have to climb ladders to the roof tent so this limits beer intake ;)

Have you looked into the practicle side of buying/registering and insuring/taxing in your name for your visit to UK...

Nope. Im guessing made difficult.
I am a Brit and hold a passport. Just moved here to Oz 15 years ago. I was exploring the possibility of buying one in my folks name registering at their address and paying the insurance with me as a named driver? Again not sure if this will work o_O

Nice. I like the fridge idea, have something similar here in Oz on our Forester. The Disco 3 looks the nuts, but Im looking at keeping the fuel cost to a minimum as well as the initial cost of the motor. I cant believe how we have our pants pulled down over here on 2nd hand cars comapared with the UK. Id love to keep the vehicle purchase under $4k (quid) roof top tent under a grand. Probably opt for a manual.

For $4k you're not going to get much in the way of reliability. The D3 is notorious for being unreliable, with high repair prices. It's an amazing vehicle, but will empty your wallet quickly if it goes wrong.
A Freelander 1 is possible for that money, a pretty nice one too, but they're much smaller than the D3, with limited carrying capacity.
The Freelander 2 is a much bigger vehicle than the FL1, about the same size as a Discovery 1, but at your budget you're going to find very high mileage, abused or tatty examples, which will have limited reliability and resale value.

How about simply hiring a normal vehicle and pitching a tent on the ground?

Speak to an insurance company as they will decide if your driving licence will be accepted that is the only stumbling block I think you will hit...

Cheers for that info, definitely taken on board. There are some (what appear to be) half decent looking FL2s on autotrader UK under $5k but yep the reliability could be an issue. We did the south of France with three kids 5 three bikes roof box and luggage one year in a 95' Disco ES. kinda wanna recapture some of that. As for the tent on the deck, certainly less scary than here in Oz with the wildlife we have. ;)

How long are you going for? I'd be temped to just rent an already equipped 4x4 (of any kind really). That way it should be hassle free and you can spend more time and money on what actually matters - the trip itself.
 
If your visiting Scotland be aware that the only place you can camp with a roof tent on a vehicle is a campsite unless you have permission from the land owner of your chosen " off grid " campsite.

Are roof tents classed like normal tents? Permits needed ?
(Yep I hate camper vans who can’t be bothered to pay for a nice pitch)

They are starting to crack down on it though, my brother works for a van hire company that also rents camper vans, they got a letter from Highland Council telling them that illegally parked camper vans will be towed away and the drivers prosecuted.
