UK expeditions?? Are they worht it? Or close alternatives??

My Defender is a 1990, 200tdi. It has crossed the Sahara 7 times and is ready to do it again in July. There is nothing wrong with an Old Defender if it has been maintained and is in good mechanical order. If anything does go wrong it is basic and simple to fix, none of this electronic stuff to go wrong.

maybe they are better off on a bus tour of the lake district?

I can completely understand the initial question of this thread and its one ive thought of asking before.

I have just purchased my first Discovery and am slowly but surely getting necessary work done before I start preparing it for something more adventurous.

I have an 8 year old son who loves the fact that we now have a LR and I have been trying to find some way of taking the first steps into overlanding. The group tours seemed a great idea as A) I am a novice and B) if I ran in to trouble with my Son on board, I would have some help. (Sods law says it will be mine that goes ping 5 miles from the start!) Being part of a group of people and meeting new friends seemed like a worthy way to spend a weekend.

I am from Kent so I would love to hear of any tours near "this end" of the country or alternatively, is there a website or publication that has documented previous routes in so you could go it alone if you wanted to.

I would value some thoughts, suggestion.

I wouldn't call green laning in the uk an expedition.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a 93 or 96 vehicle for travelling "too far" and if they had done so in the past or researched the subject they would know that many myself included, prefer older engines which are easier to repair...if they go wrong.

If they were not novices, I'm sure they would not be looking to pay someone their hard earned cash to take them laning.

As I say I could be wrong....but I don't think so.

Well I have to say we bought a weekend trip with a company (not naming them, I'm not advertising) around the Yorkshire Green lanes and I thought it was worth every penny. I say this because a) I live in the south and do not now anything about the lanes up there but wanted to go and b) i just wanted not to have to think for myself for a while.

So I think they are worth it, but I can be a lazy groat.

We have groups of experienced laners based all around the country that are willing to take people along and show them the local lanes if asked nicely and the worst it's going to cost is a few slices of cake.

Any good contacts re the above for some southern based mini tours / overland trips would be appreciated. Cakes are of course no problem.
