Sure, but I wouldn't call it 'tagging along'
It is a fully committed long distance overland haul.
I know the LC owners always have a go at the LR and vice versa,, but a well prepped Disco is more than capable.
To be honest, I would take an early Disco over a Defender just for the added comfort.
The general route isn't as 'hard core' as you might have thought, and thousands upon thousands of miles will be on tarmac, or very good gravel & shale. hence the added comfort of the Disco.
I think I read some where, that the route be it east or western will take in some thing like 70% tarmac, 20% gravel, and maybe less than 10% really crap stuff.

Ghana and the Congo have pretty rough mud runs across the length of the country all depends on what route you take and how long you have. Im sure you could avoid alot of tarmac in sub-Sahara Africa.

have you looked into shipping costs for a container out of cape town? just curious as I am loosly planning a west coast trip hopefully for 2011 or 2012. I didnt realise you could cover it in 3 months either. I was going to take my time and go for 10-12 months. The west coast route also means a cheaper carnet (200%). Just trying to put costings together to see if its viable.

we shipped a whole lot of furniture in a shared container from johannesburg to dublin and paid about £3150- and used a south african co called bibbulps.

SA in particular Cape Town is devilishlyt windy and hot in january, plus you get loads of crowds for the tourist season. IMO it is better to plan to be in the Western Cape around May - April when the wind tends to die down and the weather is glorious. I shall dig out some good lanes/routes and flipping rad campsites and wot not for you... another things is the East coast is an excellent route from Mozambique down to Cape Town and it takes you past some rad wild coastline. Not to be forgotten is Namibia but this is better done going up from Cape Town to Namibia straight up the N7 and then through the mini desert. Have a rad trip dudes and I am rather jealous... stupid recession!
