Freelander 1 Tyres

Okay Freelander Freaks.(Hope this isn't too flippant?)

Just reading through Freelandananda's post regards his newly purchased Freelander and was interested in the comments about tyres all being equal etc.

What tyres would members recommend for say, normal daily driving. Any brands that stand out as good and any that should be avoided? Likewise, for off roading etc. What do LR recommend in these cases? (Probably the most expensive)

Also, what is the cost of a VCU replacement(DIY of course) if it comes to it?

FYI I'm in a tyre shop just now having all 4 tyres on my Italian super car replaced, and an alignment done too as Spanish roads will always throw your wheels out

Yokohama Geolanders AT are pretty tough to beat in all conditions and on all surfaces.
Good grip on tarmac, wet or dry.
Good in mud and snow.
Excellent tyre life too and very reasonably priced.

Just fitted 205/80 16 Michelin Latitude Cross and very happy.

I wanted a bigger sidewall with a mud grabber and a protector rim that was also going to be quiet on road.

I had looked at Avon, Uniroyal and Good Year all of which were All Terrain and the concern was noise.

The 205/80 has loads of clearance and is chunkier than the 225/70 16 and has nearly a 1 inch (24.25mm) higher sidewall.

Plus the 205/80 was maybe 15 quid cheaper per tyre than the 225/70 16.

I think this tyre is a good all rounder as is pretty good on road, and in mud and snow.

Will report back on mileage.

VCU-£220 odd from Bell Engineering

Just put four Event AT tyres on my one, £200.00 for the lot fitted. Not enough road noise to be annoying, good grip on the road at legal speeds and they grip the muddy stuff quite well, which is why I bought them.

If you change your vcu, change the bearings as well, I think they are £40. I had Bell Engineering do my vcu and bearings for £320. Can't say I've noticed any difference other than I'm not worrying about it any more. I've just had 4 Firestones on mine, they were the mid range price tyres, once upon a time they were considered budget tyres. They were £80 a corner. Seem to grip well, not too noisy but not tried them in bad weather yet, they'll definitely be rubbish off road. I'm considering getting a spare set with decent snow tyres but where to keep them, I already have spares for the series stashed out of sight of the critical wife.
