The standard recommendation appears to be B F Goodrich A/T tyres. However, I'm not bothered about wear rates and only want to tow a boat across the beach to the sea. Consequently, will Avon Ranger A/Ts be OK or does anybody have a better budget suggestion in a size of 265/75 16?

Hi

By what I understand it doesnt make a lot of difference with the make of A/T Tyres, only difference is tread pattern and compound, what I do for towing on sand is drop the tyre pressures to around 15psi

Thank you Charlotte

Does that mean switching from my new but inexpensive Avon Rangers to BF Goodrich or Pirelli A/Ts would be a waste of money?

I go on the beach regularly and experience shows that its tyre pressure and gentle momentum over tyre type, BUT some aggresive patterns do dig in faster than the less aggresive.

If it was strictly sand driving, I'd say keep your money... the best tyres for sand are completely worn-out tyres!

The less pattern there is, the less sand is trown around. You don't want to dig, you want to float, so: low pressure (to increase contact area and decrease load) and smooth tyres do the trick.
