Currently need to replace my front tyres and have a cheap pair of generics on the back marked M&S.. I almost exclusively drive on dual carriage ways and motorways. The car currently runs on 16" alloys (inc spare).
I would like to occasionally do a little off road or green laneing. So my plan is to get a set of 18" rims and fit some dedicated road tyres with the highest efficiency I can find.. I will then put some off roads on the 16" alloy rims for when the weather is bad and enjoying the abilities of the p38.

Firstly does this sound like the ramblings of an idiot or does this make sense?? Secondly any recommendations for the on/off road options? Was thinking of Coopers for the mud.
 
Tiss a sound idea, Nexan HP`s for the road, well impressed with the two set ive had on mine and they don't break the bank I pay £320 a set all in.
 
yes, I know, but there have been many posts about ride quality being better on 16"

Mine is on 19" and the ride quality is quite acceptable. Obviously as there is more sidewall flex on 16" bumps and speed humps are smoothed out better. But in general on good roads the difference is imperceptible. Incorrectly set EAS maybe the cause of many complaints.
 
I have 16" and 18". I'd stick with 16". Steering is slightly more positive on 18" but let's be hone3st, you're not going to be throwing it around roundabouts with the back end out so the difference isn't worth it.
 
The rentals we used in Belize ran Hankook Dynapro ATm. They coped well in the jungle (lots of mud, limestone and compact clay roads) so I would assume they are OK in the UK. They also had a road going variant, which seem quite efficent and good wet weather performance .
