Its my first posting, and I'm a girl who knows little about cars, so be gentle with me please!

I have a 2002 RHD Disco which I bought last year from fellow English living in France. The previous owners had put brand new tyres on, had just had brakes done, had had a suspension problem fixed twice by Landrover France (at huge expense), and had seemed to generally look after the car well.

Within weeks though it had started sagging on its suspension when left overnight, but would rise up again once I got going. - It now does it every time I stop, and you can hear a very loud hiss and watch it sink within minutes of switching off the engine. Is this typical of a leaking airbag problem mentioned so often here?

The other problem is, that although we have done less than 10,000kms, our rear tyres are both completely bald, shredded even, on the inside. The car has also developed an awful shudder at 120kms/hour (75 mph) which gets worse when you take your foot off the accelerator. - I'm assuming that's something to do with the tyres being so bald.

We tow an Ivor Williams sheep trailer a couple of times a week for short distances, and also drive short distances on dirt roads a couple of times a week. Other than that, its mainly on the road.

Can any of you point me in the right direction on what has caused this tyre wear please? - Our local mechanic knows nothing about Landrovers other than to charge us a lot of money when we come through the door.

The current tyres are Pirelli 235/70 R17. Can I replace them with any other size? (preferably cheaper)

Thank you!

Welcome to the forum! :)

Your disco sounds like it needs some help!

Probably worth moving this post or creating a new one in the disco section further down the page. Sounds like a faulty compressor or leaking airbag yes. tyre wear may be due to this to. how long have you been driving it whilst its been sagging? The 2 problems are likely to be linked, but im no disco expert.

like i said, try the disco section further down.

Hi there and welcome.

So, you have two distant issues in my opinion:

1. The rear air suspension - this needs rectifying VERY quickly otherwise it will cost you lots. Let me explain, the airbags are leaking I suspect and what this does is to force the compressor to work overtime. Very quickly it will die and you will have to replace not just the leaking airbags but the compressor as well.

Changing the airbags is a straightforward diy job and the airbags are purchsed for about £70 each. The compressor is much more expensive:
RQG100041 AIR SUSPENSION COMPRESSOR ASSY | Discovery 2 1998-2004: Suspension | shop | www.lrseries.com | L. R. Series

2. The rear tyres are more curious. You say they are wearing only or more on the inside of the tread pattern. This implies that they are not inline, so géometrie/parallelisme might be called for. But get soem new ones before you have trouble or get nicked !!!

Incidently std tyres for your vehicle are 255/55/18 or 235/70/16 - not 17" wheels.

Thanks for your replies. And yes, you were right BigLad, I've just checked again and the current tyres are 235/70 R16s. Sorry.

Having just seen the problem with the tyres I shall be getting new ones pronto, but I'm just worried that until we work out what the problem is we shall shred the next lot too. If it were a "géometrie/parallelisme"problem wouldn't the car be pulling to the right or left? (which it isn't). Could we have them over/under inflated? - Because we tow quite a lot we have them up to 3 bars at the back and 2 at the front. Does that sound right?

And just how easy is this DIY airbag job? Would I be able to do it, or do I need to find someone who actually knows how to get the bonnet up?

Re the tracking it wouldn't neccesarily make the car pull one way or the other.

Re tyre inflation, I run ours at 2.2 at the front and 2.7 at the back and I usually leave it at that even when I'm towing, unless it's soemthing really heavy - in excess of 2.5tons.

Have a look at UP's site, he's the man when it comes to describing these jobs: www.discovery2.co.uk / Rear Suspension Air Bags
