you've opened a door on haldex vs vcu. I'll look into that. I think my main point was a history of getting a long use out of a set of tyres. Are any others getting 125,000 kms per set? (78,000 miles)

I usually get 24,000-30,000 miles per set. But that included towing.
Now the Freelander has been retired from that duty I'll expect to get more, but not that much.

30K miles is about the normal distance for FL1 tyres. My Maxxis Bravo AT are on 34K miles with probably another 5K left in them. 70K + miles is a long way for tyres. However it will depend on make, type and size along with road conditions, speed and a multitude of other factors.
 
Good on you. I knew someone would spot that. Wait till you get to how Arctic foxes jump along magnetic lines.
Thing is, the coriolus effect is actually anti clockwise in the Southern Hemisphere. And the Land Rover people I talk to are amazed over the 125,000 km usage on the first Freelander.
I'm trying to find out (seriously) whether I can do this on a Freelander 2 as well.

I've had my GT Radial MaxMilers on my F1 for 40,000kms and have 8mm tread left on the rears and 7mm on the front - I've never rotated them - average 7.5mm.

So I can rotate them and have 6mm left (legal limit is 1.5mm) Originally they were no more than 10mm deep, probably about 9.5mm, so I may only be a 1/4 of the way through them - meaning I could get 160,000 kms (100,000 miles)!

The MaxMilers are heavy duty van tyres and they're pumped to 40psi. So the ride isn't fantastic, OK on road but on gravel they're quite painful. They are though built to last :)

They were also good value - I was looking at about $220 per corner for Goodyear Wranglers which were on the wheels - but they were discontinued here in the 185/80R15 anyway. Ended up with the Maxmilers at $150 per corner.

Have to say I'm more than happy with them.

Realistically I don't suppose I'll get 160K out of them - I don't fancy running near 1.5mm tread - but they should get to 125K.
 
Some tyre manufacturers state rotation at 6 to 8k miles is good practice while others disagree saying it's bad practice and list safety reasons. Tyre fitters have the same mixed opinion. The FL2 manual says "Do not rotate tyres around the vehicle" but many do. Typically the front near side will wear quicker on a FL2 which is why some swop tyres on the same axle.
