Tyre Question

Hi

I have on my Defender 90 what I presume are the original wheels i.e Landrover alloys, I believe they are called boost. The size of the wheel is 7J x 16 x 33. The tyre on there is 235/85/16. My question is can I fit a 265 tyre onto these rims safely? So far I have had 2 different answers. One garage saying yes that is fine and another saying no they wouldnt fit it because its too dangerous i.e. the rims not wide enough.

So what do you guys think?

I have 265x75x16s on my defender and so far I've experienced no problems (nor have I heard that this might be an issue) the only thing I would recommend would be a spacer kit. When I first fit the 265s on full lock they rubbed on the chassis, after fitting a spacer kit (30mm) this was no longer an issue. Hope this helps

Thanks for the replys. You have also answered another question for me as I was wondering about the tyres rubbing. Where did you get your spacers from? I know there are quite a few people selling them.

I have 265/75r16 on the same size rims and they were bought as a package. They will rub on your radius arms on full lock so you just need to adjust the stop locks. Fitting spacers may mean your tyres stick out past the arches which is an MOT fail unless you get bigger arches.

I have 265/75/16's
on my 90, they will rub without spacers, but alternatively you could adjust the steering lock nuts.

If you put a spacer kit on a defender with standard wheel arches (boost alloys and 256 tyres) then it doesnt stick out beyond the arch. Even with 285s and spacers its still within the arch. the reason i added a spacer kit and didnt adjust the lockstops was because there wasnt enough bolt to adjust

My tyres stick out past the wheel arch by a few mill, well several few mil.
I understand that I am supposed to have extended wheel arches, I just change mine on MOT time

wind the stops. spacers will put extra strain on yer wheel bearings...
265/75 will be fine on boosts mate...

mine didnt fail the mot when i had 35" simex and spacers using standard arches

the only reason i fitted extended arches was i got piissed of with the amount of mud being splatterd up the side

That's a shame WLM ... there was a business opportunity for you there! At the end of every day you could have scraped off the mud and sold it to all the Gaylander owners so they could stick it to theirs.

I have 265 75 17's with 30mm spacers in my D90 w/o any problems. They do stick out less that an inch but it's OK. I will get extended wheel arches in about 3 months. I don't ned it right now here in New York City.
