Tyre Question

Hallo
Got a puncture yesterday... My series III is fitted with mud tyres (BF Goodrich LT235 85 R 15) and I am not sure whether to get another one to replace the punctured one (the spare is a completely different tyre and only good for an emergency) or whether to get a cheap set of all terrains.
I can't afford expensive ones at mo.

Am on a budget so probably would go for another mud tyre (McConechy's would do it for £160.74 inc vat and fitting), but I mostly drive on the road. It's a harsh loud wobbly ride, but expect this from an old landy, would all terrains make much of a difference to this, and is it dangerous to use mud tyres on the road? Would it ruin them/the car? Landy's only used for the fella to go back and forth to work (a 15 min drive) and for me for fun. I am hoping he won't be using it much longer though when we get our wee golf back on road... When I had my bronco that had all terrains and in all honesty it drove very similar to the Landy.

Would appreciate your expert guidance please.

Reapir it?

Worked for me .. BFG AT 31 x 10.5 R15's .. been repaired for over 6000 miles now ..

If yours are tubed it's a tad harder to repair, but can still be done ..

Thank you Paul. I've done normal tyres with tyreweld stuff, but not one on a 4x4... Worth a go! I haven't seen the tyre as the Land Rover is stuck in the work car park, so will have to get the fella to see if can identify where the hole is.
I think I will get another mud tyre and use the repaired one as a spare, the BF Goodrich seem to get good reviews and it appears a lot of people do use them on the road, and so long as you aren't hooning around (imposs in mine!) then they are ok.

I am not letting the fella use my landy any more. Since he has been borrowing it he has:
Broken a wing mirror
Broken the drivers seat belt fitting
Ran out of petrol
Deadened the battery/flooded engine
Had a puncture (ok that can can happen to anyone, but I don't think he drives the old thing very kindly)

And now I have another weekend where I can't start my preparations for painting because it's not at home. :frusty:

Heh, I wouldn't use tyreweld .. the stuff I used looks like a pipe cleaner but sticky, it vulcanises itself to the hole which has to be reamed out to fit it! You have to push it through from the outside, then draw the tool back quickly for it to work, takes quite a bit of effort.

So long as the hole in in the treaded area it should be OK. I think there's a limit, maybe 1" from the sidewall, but don't quote me on the actual figure, that a puncture repair is legal. i wouldn't even try if it was actually on a sidewall ..

Not sure, but I think that type of plug repair is ilegal, thought it had to be the mushroom type that's fitted from inside.

Handy to carry though

I see Britpart doesn't have the best reputation on here, but so long as this is fit for the job, then ok with me.

Also, I have not been able to find out whether the tyres are tubed or tubeless. It appears that these BFG mud terrain things are purchased tubeless, but someone on this forum selling some of the same mentioned they can be tubed as better for off-roading. I can't see my own tyres cos the Landy's not at home. This may be a really daft question but how can u see if the tyres are tubed or not cos the tubes would be on the inside...?

Thank you Dent, the repair is just so it can get to the garage for a new tyre. If the repair is ok, is alright to use that one as the spare? The spare he came with is a different size to the tyres on the car.

I thought so too, but apparentlynot so long as they're fitted on the treaded area .... and they're freely available here too ..

Problem sorted!
Temporary fix and Landy home now
New tyre on order for fitting Tue/Wed
Will properly fix old one to use as the spare

If anyone else is a dumbass like me and has the same questions, all mine have been answered now so putting them up for refernece cos I couldnae find all answers on here:
Yes BFG Mud Terrain are tubeless
Yes they're easy to repair (for emergency use)
and Yes they are ok for road use so long as no hooning and no driving over metal shards!!!
