Series 3 Tyre on front axle pokes out more than the other 3!!!!

Hello all,

Quick question. Ive only recently noticed but 1 wheel on the front axle is nearly flush with the wheel arch! All the other wheels are approximately 1 inch from the edge of the wheel arch but this one is nearly flush with it! All wheels are the same size etc.

Any ideas greatly accepted.

Thats what I'm thinking. Ill have to have a measure other wise i don't think theres anything else that it could be.

Just checked all rims and they are the same 51/2" x 16" x 33". Ive just measured it properly and its 1/2 further out than the remaining 3!

The axle is all straight and suspension all in line so I'm stumped.
 
Take the wheel off and have a nosey.

It's possible there's a spacer or wider drum but more likely something slightly out of alignment.
Check the springs for location and whether they're straight, likewise spring hangers, bushes for wear etc.

Tbh Series wing position isn't exactly a reliable datum point so just check nothing is bent or where it shoudnt be.
 
Many thanks for all your replies. Ill check the top swivel bush tomorrow but what else could indicate it was the swivel bush?

Whats the best way to check the bush? Jack up and use a priy bar under the wheel?

yes thats a good way to test
wheel leaning different to the other side
 
So swivel pin is fine, think i need to take it off and have a look see if theres a spacer stuck on the hub

Swapping the wheels over is a good start, gets rid of a whole set of issues in one go. Is the camber the same both sides? Is the axle centred and spring hangers verticle? If the bushes are worn the springs can twist on the hangers a bit. I had this on the rear and it felt odd but not as odd as it should have when I found out how bad the bushes were. The rear axle was moving about 1/2 inch to one side.
 
one way to check for worn swivel pins is jack the car up on one side and get your hand at the top and bottom of the wheel and try to push pull and if there is any wear you will get movement, and to see if you have any tie rod ends rock left to right with hands at 9 and 3 o'clock thats what the mechanic would say to me when we did road worthies on vehicles.
 
Many thanks for all your replies. After much investigation I've found that 1 wing is slightly bowed and the front axle has about 17mm to move across. I placed a piece of wood and measured how far the hub poked out and it was 17mm! I suppose landies weren't build on precision :) Its not that noticeable but a good thing to put right when i renew my springs :D

Had this on my 90 had a big dint on the n/s/f wing and it made the wheel look like it was sticking out a few inches and I hated it :(
 
The axle is located on the spring by a peg in the spring sitting in a hole on the axle to be 17mm out the peg must be missing or incorrectly located this would also twist the spring hanger plates. Post some pics up of axle and spring as well as hangers.
