Turning key and nothing happening

Hi guys back again

Took my discovery td5 to get mot and was chatting to the guy..
He told me to jump in and start it to put on the ramp..

I got in turned the key all the dash lights came on fuel pump was running but my starter didn't operate..

After about 6 different turns of the key she fired up

Iv changed the starter already for a brand new one so its not that im sure!

Been having trouble cold starting in the mornings she fires and almost runs then cuts out.. then turn the key again and shes away...

Im wondering if this is related...

the mechanic said it could be imobiliser of ignition barrel what do you guys think?

Looking at the wiring diagram the 'main relay' it goes on to feed fuel pump relay. so I would have disregarded this as a fault as the your fuel pump and lights are running. However having recently read something in the workshop manual on the electrics, it did suggest even with a main relay faulty that other systems would still work.
in short check the main relay. You should hear it clicking.
If it is immobiliser (factory standard) then main relay wont work nor would fuel pump.

My initial thoughts were starter motor solenoid contacts, but as you replaced it. Then it should be ok.

Cold start problem could be glow plugs or supply. Thus maybe going back to main relay.

Main relay for defender is under the drivers seat. In my case it's yellow. Try swapping it for another relay of the same number.

- swap relay R2(starter) with R3(headlamp wash) for test,
- check if the small lucar connector on the starter and the main lead are making good contact...if no joy undo the bolts of the engine bay fusebox, lift it as to have access to the connectors, diconnect and give contact spray... they used to corrode,
- also the crank contact of the ignition switch might make tricks

that's what comes to my mind about this issue
