I had the same issue as this and it turned out to be the starter motor solenoid. You can buy repair kits for them
turn the key 5 or 6 times

Yeah same here, starter repair kit is only around £12 on ebay. Mine starts first time every time now! And a new batt certainly helped

update...…
well checked all connections and cant find anything loose,so have ordered a new starter motor.[I know I could of got a repair kit but it wasn't that expensive].well chuff me,from the minute I ordered the starter motor it hasn't done it once.land rovers you've got to love em. j

Maybe the wiggling or starter wires did the thing ... they do have a tendency to need re-crimping on the little white exciter wire to the starter ...
