Turbo

Hi all , I've got a 200tdi is it normal to find oil in the pipe that goes from the turbo to the intercooler? There wasn't loads but it was quite wet .

It would depend where is is coming from? Is there oil in the pipe from the air filter to the trubo, if there is it will be coming from the rocker breather and is fairly normal. If the air filter and intake pipework is spotlessly clean then the oil will be coming form worn seals in the trubo.

Any engine with a closed crankcase breather system will have oil in the intake pipework even new stuff, excess oil means bigger issues.
Turbo issues are rare so long as oil changed every now and then

I brought her 2 1/2 years ago put her in the shed and then rebuilt her she's been on the road about 2 months so can't say how she was treated in the past. There's a small amount of oil around the crankcase breather in the air filter box but none visible in the pipe, the turbo to air filter pipe is clean no sign of oil , the oil in the turbo to intercooler pipe is black. There is oil round the oil return pipe and there looks like there's a small amount coming from the front of the turbo at the base.

I have always had a bit of oil from the turbo to the intercooler. Its been like that for about 5 years. The last time I looked there was about a tea spoon full. My Defender doesn't smoke or require any oil in between servicing. and goes very well. I always assumed it was normal. I suppose it depends on how much oil is in the tube leading to the intercooler. I would call mine wet

Minor oil leaks are normal on all engines, well maybe not the german stuff so much!
Theres weeping/damp patches = who cares
Leaking but not dripping on the floor easy to clean off and again who cares?
Leaking and dripping on the deck needs checking asap but even then may not be serious enough to warrant attention.
If it starts well, goes well and uses little oil dont worry.

Cheers all ,I did know that oil from the rocker breather came into the pipes but when there was none in the filter and other pipe thought I'd better check it out. There was oil leaking from the turbo drain pipe , I've got a new one to fit that's why I stripped it down. Just a thought I used some running in oil from Turners in the engine for a few hundred mile, that was as black as tar when I drained and changed the oil the other week, the oil in the intercooler pipe was black but the oil on the dip stick is the same colour as when I put it in and the oil on the turbo drain pipe appears clear so wonder if it was the old stuff in there ! She starts first turn every time no hesitation she's not using loads of oil she goes ok needs the turbo boost upping to 1 bar and the fuel pump tweaking have just fitted a straight through middle section and better air filter the tweaks were this weekends jobs , the sumps leaking got a gasket for that, used sealant when I rebuilt the engine and torqued up as per the land rover workshop manual so pan might be warped. think the plan is put her back together clean the pipes do the tweaks and take a look in another month or so and see if there is any more there.

I've got a similar issue with a 300Tdi engine I've rebuilt. Mine is using a canny bit of oil though. There's quite a bit of oil in the pipe from the intercooler in to the inlet manifold in mine. Mine's smoking too

Got no smoke with mine and not really using oil as said got an oil leak from the sump pan found someone on ebay who did a cork gasket so will put that on and see if that cures it, will have a look in a month or so and keep an eye on the oil. You rebuild them think you've put everything wright get them on the road and then there's a leak you sort it the something else goes wrong , ah the joys of Land Rover ownership its a good job we love them isn't it.

It certainly is, though mine's in the dog house at the moment!

Yep you can hate them kick em swear at em but as soon as you get behind that wheel start her up do press that accelerator a smile comes on your face and all is forgotten till the next bout of swearing .
