Hi I am after some help and opinions please. Today when I pulled anto the A66 my 03 Disco Td5 made a squeal from the engine, the car pulled OK and stopped squealing so I drove on. When I accelerated to join the A1 it squealed again with a bit of smoke but nothing excessive. I tried to limp it for a bit but the squeal was constant so I stopped to check the belts and pumps were OK, they seemed to be so I called for recovery. The patrol said the squeal was from the turbo and the car shouldn't be drove until the turbo had been changed so he recovered me home. I checked Rave and started to remove the hoses and checked the blades for play but I can't feel any. Does it seem right if the turbo is knackered?
My Disco has 103k,an egr blank and was remapped two years ago.

What colour smoke was it?

Smoke seemed black from what I saw in the mirror, it smoked a bit before I blanked the egr last month but its smoked less since and has drove better, til now !

not had it happen to mine. but have read that the exhaust manifold can warp on remapped engine. possible cause of squeak?
and has already been said. take fan belt of and run the engine for a moment.

as previosly mentioned on my 01 td5 i had a loud squell every time i excelerated a bit fast me and my mechanic mate was convinced it was the turbo which is right next to exhaust manifold fitted a new turbo . not cheap, squeell still there. tightened up the exhaust manifold nuts no more squelling .evidently the exhaust manifold warping is a common problem with the td5 as tightening up the exhaust manifold stopped mine squeeling it has now 2 years down the line started to squeel again which will need the exhaust manifold replacing. another linked problem is the exhaust manifold studs snaping off when you tighten them up.

Fitted new turbo, on removal there was play and actuator was very stiff, took it for a run and squeal still there! Was getting dark so will check belts and manifold tomorrow, thanks for your info lads

check if there is any black smoke around the firewall/manifold also you better look into front down pipe, heard it also makes the engine whistle

i am having the same whistle issue and mechanic said it's turbo but i dont hv to worry about it

Thanks for the advice, it looks as if the manifold may be warped. I have tightened it as much as I dare and slapped on some exhaust paste as a temporary fix.

This will 99% be a warped manifold. Common on the TD5 and more so after a remap. Check for soot around the exhaust ports, ( especially nearest the baulkhead ). Easily rectified with a re-skim. You will more than likely have a broken stud or two which will need carefully drilling and removing. I would advise replacing all the studs with GENIUNE LR ones.

I have heard mention on other threads that de-webbing the manifold with a cutting disc on an angle grinder after it has been skimmed will prevent this problem happening again.

I think the idea behind it is that the manifold becomes more flexible. It will probably still try to warp, but the increased flexibility would make it easier for the studs to hold it square to the cylinder head.

Others have also replaced the standard studs with Wurth items while the manifold was off.
