Turbo Wastegate

Im not sure on the defender but from memory my old td5 disco had a small vac solenoid tucked down under the air con pump and this controlled the air to the turbo actuator.

Yes and no!!
Typical unhelpful reply!! :D

It did struggle maintaining speed and momentum uphill but now it's there on all runs, having to keep right foot hard down to keep her going when in gear.

Did the coasting thing again on the way home. Coasted for 1/2 mile slowing gently. No noises or grinding sounds so guess all is good there

Tell you another thing i had on the disco was the throttle pedal playing up, its runs on 2 tracks later one has 3 tracks applying 5 volts as one track increases from 0 to 5 volts the other decrease from 5 volts to 0 sort of a double check and what had happened was one of the plastic tracks had worn though.
Found this with a nanocom.

haha like it you got a reader ? does live data to ? look at the pedal readings , try pulling off the maf sensor and try that should go to a default setting in the ecu if it makes a diff , turbo has no play or oil or sticking ???

yea norm but seen a few not hitting full boost like up hill foot to floor and it was the turbo having tight spots ( wasnt on a land rover tho ) sounds like a fuel problem but is it manual or ecu tellin to reduce fuel

OK guys, after a weekend of tinkering in between BBQ's and Beer! :D I have some thoughts for you.....

Now with Boost gauge fully fitted so I can see what is going on.

Driving normally 50mph flat road, pedal 3/4 to the floor boost gauge 1.1/1.2 bar, lift off a little boost drops to 0.4 and engine looses all speed.

Pulling away from lights, start to move in 1st lift off accelerator pedal to slowish change to 2nd, engine revs disappear and she almost stops moving. have to give a bit more revs to get engine to pull, noticed the same thing going from 2nd to 3rd.

Same thing but not coming off revs between gear changes and she pulls happily away!

General driving around town 30/40mph 3rd/4th gear always on full boost otherwise engine is gutless.

Reading through older posts it seems maybe the boost is a little high and I should be maxing out at 1.0 bar.

So any thoughts???

Agree re 1 bar max being the 'norm'

Not sure why or how this would link to the revs dropping away/lack of pulling you describe.

Suspect you've checked that none of the turbo pipes have collapsed - do wonder if Shifty's comment re: the MAP sensor is worth a revisit

Sorry - think you need someone with more technical knowledge than I have - sounds a real puzzle

Ahh yep sorry guys in my old thread linked somewhere in this one, I have changed all the turbo hoses for flashy silicon ones and also the MAF for a new shiny genuine LR one :D

Think the later disco TD5 had electronic wastegates but the Defenders are all manual. could be wrong though, either way mine is manual.
