Turbo to intercooler pipe

Hi all, been looking on here for years and always found the answers to my questions but have now had to sign up as can't find the answer to my Q.

So..... the metal pipe coated in rubber from the turbo to the intercooler, what it the rubber covering for?? I'm thinking either sound deadening or to keep heat off from the exhaust, if it's purely to keep it quiet I'm thinking it'll be better taken off than left on to keep heat in the pipe i.e. Insulating it??

Thoughts on this any1??

It would help if you indicated what vehicle you own,
In my 200TDI the Turbo to Intercooler pipe is stainless and not coated in anything, that's how its staying.

From his name I'd guess he has a 300, When I cut off my rubber sleeve I found surface rust underneath but only where the rubber was, so it had trapped moisture inside, so I cleaned it up, painted it and left the rubber off

Ok cheers for the answers, I ended up leaving it on. When I get round to it I might swap it for an ally pipe and weld a few fins on it to aid in cooling the intake temps.

By the way it's a 97 300tdi edc

Thanks for your reply, did you replace it yourself with stainless or is it a factory fit on the 200s?

Previous owner to my knowledge but it's not fresh but zero corrosion, lasted longer than the hosing which i've replaced. If you are really concerned about heat dissipation, have you considered getting it ceramic coated?
