Hi folks.Need an urgent reply on this if pssible. Any Sunday night TD4 experts about? Car going in to be sorted tomorrow. Had problems with oil leaks, smoke plumes and lack of power at 60-70mph. Dealership said Air flow meter ok but EGR valves knackered along with other minor problems to the tune of £400! I'm also told that the turbo is "on it's way out" but will have to monitor once this initial remedial work is done. What I want to know is this. Car's done 88k and drives like a dream (apart from the above problems) so surely the turbo will be ok. Quote to replcae turbo is frightening! Any advice or information would be gratefully recd. I love this car:p but feel that the so called award winning BMW engine is going to make me bankrupt!

Hello

Turbo's can die at anytime! it all depends how you treat them from new!

The turbo shut down rules are below,

1, NEVER turn off the moment you pull up. (that turbo is still spinning at 3000+ RPM)!!!

2, Let your engine idle for 30 to 60 seconds before turning off, this keeps an oil supply running to the turbo.

Hope this helps save you money in the future!!!!:D :D :D :D :D

there are engineering places that will recondition your turbo. i had mine done on my rangie recently and it was 1/3 the LR quoted price.

just do a google search for something like "diesel turbo repair"

Thanks both. I appreciate the quick response. It turns out there are more probs with the car :0( The injectors have had it apparently! Not sure what to do now. Feels like everything is against me owning one of these!

Dont always listen to the stealers half the time they havnt got a clue, try taking it to an independant co. When I have had problems with my td4 they are only interested in the dam computer and almost insist that nothing else could possibly go wrong... having owned vauxhalls in the past I know this is cobblers, when my iac valve was playing up on my calibra they insisted that nothing was wrong... guess what went to a specialist and they said all I needed to do was clean the iac valve with carb cleaner and it was then good as new... vauxhall didnt have a clue! most of the specialists have learned and become very good in the dealerships for fault diagnosing and go independant leaving in my opinion the less experianced (reserved description) behind unless you are lucky ya dealership has experianced mechanics that is but so far I have not had much confidence in them... rant rant rant :) maybe Im just unlucky, but it was also pointed out to me by a car salesman and we all know they tell the truth lol!!!

To back up the previous post, stay away from the dealers, you said the car was running like a dream before the smoke which wouldnt indicate injector failure.

Get it to a specialist who will have a much better idea than a LR dealer, just a note, my local Subaru dealer only had 1 fully Subaru trained engineer in the workshop, all the certificates on the showroom wall had his name on them and when he upped and left and set up on his own, the dealership had 6 other so-called mechanics for another 9 months before 1 more was officially trained by Subaru.

In most cases this is the same with dealers all over as they cant afford to have all the mechanics trained by the manufacturer, they will have guys who have a general idea but who will always rely on the hand held tech 2 devices which act as their god.
If that doesnt work they will seek the advice of the longest serving mechanic who may have a better idea.

Thanks guys. I appreciate the advice. I've looked up on google and in YP and found a couple of options. To be fair the dealers were quite good to me but it can't hurt getting a 2nd opinion. Can anyone recommend any turbo diesel specialists in or around Cov, Leam, Warwick area? I really want to hang on to my Landy, I love it, but I can't keep messing about with the little bugger! Need to get it sorted as use it every day for work. Cheers
JK

I'm taking my 03 TD4 commercial to a guy today in Bromsgrove, he's been recommended, will let you know how I get on

I think the waste gate acctuator is buggered on mine, will have to wait and see what they say
