Turbo on a 02 TD4

Hi guys.

After my last post it would appear that the Turbo is on the way out. What would everyone say about fitting a new one. Is it a fairly easy job or a Garage job. I did my flywheel replacement earlier in the year. Any advice about pitfalls etc... Would be great.

If you can change the flywheel, then you should be fine changing the turbo. Its not difficult - access is tight, and it requires patience and a little dexterity, but nothing more.

Haynes says to remove the IRD - this is not necessary. It would be easier with the IRD off but thats a fair bit of work to save 10 minutes fiddling.

Just take your time. There is a thread on here about it.
As dave21478 says, its more fiddly than anything.

Are you sure that it is the turbo that's going? There would need to be more symptoms than the engine running on a few seconds - oily smoke from the exhaust being the main one?

Hi mate I am going to try the pressure reg first if that is not the fix then the turbo is being replaced. Thanks for the heads up on this particular problem.

Fiddly and nice to have a second pair of hands but not essential. Last turbo I did bought turbo core kit and refurbished turbo then fitted back. Garret turbo core under £140

Thanks mate I will check them out.

What other stuff will I need to refurbish the turbo or will it all come in the same kit?

My core came with gaskets and rings just check with supplier before you buy if not order some only a couple of quid, also make sure the stop screw is pre set, most cores from suppliers on ebay WILL be pre set, and just avoid the real Chinese Cheapies
