Turbo Failure

Finally got the Turbo out yesterday.

Rave said to remove it from the bottom but there was no space to take it past the sub frame so I removed the drivers side headlight and slipped it out past the Aircon pipes.

The spindle through the middle is still in tacked but plenty of play from side to side so looks like the bearing has just failed. Won't know properly until it's been opened up fully.

Bearings normally collapse over time this is due to lack of sufficient lubricant reaching the bearings when the engine has been turned off and the turbo is still spinning at 100k. All turbo's fail eventually, but leaving them to idle with the engine running just helps them to live longer.

+1 and a short warm up from cold also helps.

I have found a company that sells the turbo core. has anyone ever replaced one themselves?

The videos on youtube seem pretty straight forward. Its a big saving as the core is only £175 instead of a repaired unit at £325-£390

Yeah guess so. Not a great time of year to be spending heaps of cash though.

A little birdie told me you might do tyres Wil2813? Is this correct?

Right it's been sent off now and a recon unit is on it's way back to me.

Of to the stealer tomorrow to get some new gaskets and bolts before I put it all back together again.

Do yourself a favour, as the bearing has collapsed, Id remove and clean out the intercooler, as it would have most certainly passed oil into the inlet side of it.

Yeah I'm taking off the Intercooler and the crank case breather as well.

While I'm there ill do the drive belt and possibly the gearbox oil and filter but maybe not as I'm working on the floor.

Wil there's a PM coming your way.

Lots of Xmas treats delivered today for fitting the turbo.

Evening All,

Just a quick question. Do i really need to remove the front bumper to remove the intercooler or will it come out with the rad internally?

Ive already got the viscous fan off to replace it so the rad is pretty straight forward to remove.

I know I'm gonna sort out the upgrade later. I was having trouble getting it in time. Its nive and easy to get to so ill do it later.
