Has anyone got a pair of pliers and a file I can borrow....

Think these might need a bit of attention as well...

Came out of my 2000 TD5 Defender bought in April this year. First L/R I've owned for at least 15 years and something I always wanted to get back to. Thought it would be a better bet than the old Series 3 I had then, but got to say its spent most of its time sitting in the driveway. Blew on its first decent trip while traveling on the Highway at Highway speeds. No warning and had been pulling well up hills etc. Noticed a loss of power and a lot of white smoke out the rear and when I had a look under the bonnet it was pumping oil out of the flange joint between turbo and exhaust. Was idling fine when I pulled up for a look but was pumping the oil out fast and by the time I got back to the cab to shut it down heard a couple of thumps from the big ends.
Big question is....
  • What might have caused it???
  • What other damage can I expect???
  • What do I need to check/replace before I fit a new one???
Hoping I can get some advice from those who have been there done that.
 
Looks like that Turbo gave way in a big way, real pain as you've just got it. I've a TD5 of the same vintage, maybe I need to check my turbo out in case it's starting to get wobbly....... I'm wondering what is the average lifespan of a TD5 turbo, do they tend to give up after a certain mileage?

Turbo was probably just on its way out, doesnt look too bad though, you shouldnt have any engine damage but check the boost hoses for any signs of debris, hopefully they are clear!

Replacment turbo. I believe @Shifty1962 has one for sale at a good price on here.

Good question. I've just got a new unit from the UK...will date it when I put it in ;)

Have got an original garret from the UK... just worried about fitting it without a bit of background of what might have caused so much damage in a short time.
 
I'd check and thoroughly clean all the air inlet system .. Water into the air cleaner can easily clog it a bit, then dry off and bits get blown through .. often very hard but brittle bits that will really screw up a turbo blade if it gets hit! No air filter can let leaves and crpa through, broken hoses similarly etc etc. It could also conceivably just be a build-up of oil in the system that has got blown into the turbo and it's just said "screw that, I'm giving up" ... ;)

its not uncommon turbos wear over time, poor oil changing creates faster wear as does low oil pressure,get oil pressure checked when new one is fitted
 
Not experienced this myself but I suspect turbo bearing failure as the cause, due to lack of oil and filter changes or incorrect grade of oil. That would also explain your thumping big ends.

Will have a look at that. Air filter wasn't changed at the last service. Read somewhere that the EGR can cause a buildup of oil and carbon on the turbo fan. Might be worth looking at removing it.

I work with turbos part of my job
unfortunately a turbo is like a light bulb is can blow at any time they also fail in mysteries ways
you have to remember this turbo bearing is seeing up to 2000 to 30000 thousand rpm on a daily basis

looking after the turbo is idle shut down or turbo savours turbo timers also change drive style prior to shut down although these methods are not 100% but every little helps ..the reason I added in an accumulator tank to my turbo

the quality of oil used in the engine also comes into play as well as a clean air filter as also a free flow exhaust

How much oil was left in the engine....did it still show on the dipstick. Did the oil pressure warning light come on?

Thanks Ozyboy. How is an accumulator set up. I have only had the Landy a few months so don't know much about it yet except it looks in pretty good condition. I have been very conservative driving it and letting it idle down but that doesnt mean the previous owner has. Have already looked at timers. Does anyone have a suggestion on what to buy?

HI lightning. The oil is just over the low notch on the dipstick. The engine was idling when I got out to look at it. I saw that oil was pumping out of the braided exhaust coupling so I went back to the cab to shut it down. Just as I got there the engine knocked twice and then I shut it down.

i never realised you could get something like a acculator it filters the oil again from the main oil filter and then runs into the turbo, and it stores oil up above the turbo so it can slowly run past the turbo bearings after the engine is shut down.
driving easy before you stop the engine will help too, just try to limit the turbo from spooling up before you shut it down, but the accumulator sounds like a very good idea. extra piece of mind that the turbo is getting cleaner oil as the turbo is a vital part well sort of and if that fails your stuffed, and you dont wanna be breaking down out in the middle of nowhere with a failed turbo, i just dont trust turbos to be honest, but anyway everyone is different.
