I saved my (important to me) PM's and those that were trash were deleted when received, and some never read just deleted because of who sent them.

I suspect it's because up to 6 members can be in a conversation and they are stored grouped that way. It's quite different, others can be invited later and see the whole conversation (I think the OP can block that option) and possibly the OP can stop posts being edited though my settings might be a bit different so I'm not sure.
