Nasty wear on the camshaft lobe that powers vacuum pump. Thought “oh no that’ll cost”. 80 odd quid from turners! 😂 can’t complain about Land Rover parts costs.
Have you seen the photo of the old vacuum pump from when I changed it? Not that surprised that the lobe is worn to be honest!

I’m half tempted to get the machine shop to build the bottom end up and crack on with the welding. I’ve no idea of costs of this though and need to call them today when I get a sec. I’m excited to strip down it all down. I haven’t got bore mics and would do it using plastigage to work out tolerances. Might be worth leaving the bottom end to the pros.
You always worry that every single thing has been checked or done when putting it in someone else’s hands though!

Bit like my oil seal leak, after having the cam belt changed, I took it back and he says he put another new kit in, but it still leaks from the wading plug hole. Need to find someone who you know will do it properly.
I'm not good with removing cam belts.
 
Haven’t started on engine yet but couldn’t resist a little tinkering. Really chasing a premium feel for the interior. I think it’s achievable.
First step is walnut then I’ll be adding more leather touches.

The walnut set I got was a little damaged but not too bad. Some bits had gone a bit milky in the clear. Others had cracked or scratched.
The walnut switch piece, the cherry on the cake, was first experiment to fix. The veneer is thin as hell and I did Nick it a couple times. I’ve used filler where I have which should darken as I coat.

The switch panel was missing the heated seat holes which I dremmeled in.

I’m not putting thick poly coating on it, I’ll use a couple of oils I think. Seems wrong to put lacquer on walnut!! You’re meant to enhance it, not hide it.

Annnnd I’ve ****ed the trim 🤦‍♂️ was going well until I got to the dark patches. The veneer comes off with it.
So, I’m going to re-veneer.
 
Had to weld some tv bracket bolts up for the pulley as the threads were tiny on it! Worked and that’s all that matters 😂

CR bearings show scorch marks - assumed lack of oil/high miles. All look pretty similar to be honest.

Pistons and rods out then stopped to fit an overhead light in the shack as switch and wiring been in for ages!!

Definitely. The head would’ve caused issues first I reckon but I’d bet those bearings had a good few k left in them!
To be honest I wouldn't be sure that the cracks in the head would have been an issue any time soon. Heads on the M51d25 used in the P38 are renowned for cracking. I've had three different heads now to inspect and not had one without any cracks at all. One on mom's car at the moment had some small cracks when I had it pressure tested and skimmed 4 years and 30k miles ago (admittedly being a p38 it's spent at least one of those years not being started never mind driven). Comparatively the 300tdi doesn't really have a reputation for cracking that I'm aware of?

Bit more progress…

Dash out and a dig into one of my favourite areas. The ridiculous bottom corner of the windscreen. Believe it or not, I’ve got lucky here and was happy with what I found! I’ve left it soaking in deox gel

Sound deadening was wringing wet. A pillar footing looks alright. Bit of a nasty bit by the dash bracket but screwdriver didn’t go through it I still think I’ll chop it out as it will go at some point at the joint.
