TRIP HITS TROUBLE

Can anyone help, we have started on our trip down to The Gambia, the first leg of the journey is in convoy to the Malaga area of Spain, we are leaving one vehicle at our home here and continuing in the donor vehicle to the destination. The donor (Mitsubishi) is behaving perfectly, however my 2009 landy aint! its a 2.4 D and has developed a major issue - keeps going into limp mode with no engine management light on - the header tank is overflowing and loosing pressure also. no water in oil or oil in water but if idle for a minute a little white smoke ( similar to a failed head gasket ). As this is a transit engine I am familiar with these and never experienced a head gasket failure or known one! its like the head is cracked, has anyone else had this? I did call our local dealer up in Cumbria who stated he also thinks this and I would be better to replace the full power unit! not buying this though as why no fix? the temp does rise prior to the limp mode but only momentary. Any advise on the matter would be welcome. @gencybay - and the self important @JohnM70 - love the way you entertain each other! my Ovens are clear

Glad to hear that we warrant the occasional desire in you to come out or retirement.

If I were seeking advice about diesel engine foibles, I would see what @wammers had to say.

Sometimes he says things like it sounds like a sticky injector that's causing overfueling, and thus overheating but you never really know with @wammers. He knows all sorts of weird stuff about diesels that I'll never hope to understand.

cheers for the post, be back on the site full time after the trip as I know you miss me @gencybay - hopefully the post will reach @wammers or @jamesmartin or anyone else who can help. I have found a 2009 2.4 engine in Malaga at a breakers with 60k miles on but its 3000euro + I will have to get it fit here. regarding the overfueling, the car is running perfect ( otherwise ) and it has four new injectors fitted that were new from LR and programmed by them. Strange that this has happened after all this time! the radiator is warm all over but haven't checked the thermostat.

it would seem to be gasket or a crack,with it seemingly having steam from the exhaust

I'd see if you can find a commercial vehicle place - a replacement head for it shouldn't be too hard to source and fit and they will have the experience and be better than a stealers...

Can you get the vehicle recovered to the UK, perhaps on a recovery truck and ferry, or by containerising it and sending it back?

And sort it out at your leisure when you are back from the Gambia trip.

Might be easier to source an engine here, you would have your own workshop facilities, and no language or prejudice against Brit barriers.

looking into this now, you are correct about the prejudice!! wind you there is a place I use for our run around over here and he seems ok -- or I could go and see Jock from the TV show!!

I have never broken down abroad, but except for minor repairs, I always try and get the vehicle home if I break down in the UK.

Most things in life are easier with yer local contacts and suppliers.

I have a breakdown cover that covers EU so just waiting for them to contact me now - that will get the car back home at least

Sounds like a good result to me. And not going to cost arms and legs or interfere with the rest of your trip in the Mitsi.

That's your best bet I would imagine by far if it's terminally bad and needs attending to.

Landy collected and on-route home, best £87 I have spent + £100 xs similar price to ferry! fingers crossed for the Mitsubishi making the rest of journey ok - when we cross the water I will be in Africa and have no cover, This has me paranoid now. We are heading out of Arroyo on Sunday morning so fingers crossed.
