My XJ8 (x308) would happily return 30mpg on a fast cruise - it was significantly better on fuel then my 3.6 (XJ40) or 4.0 (X300) XJ6 despite having much more power. I've got a soft soft for the ol' XJS!

Yep, loved mine, was much more reliable than the German crap that preceded it, in fact it never gave any trouble in 50K miles.

XJSs were always nice cars - beautiful ride, tidy handlers, the post 95 ones are a cracking classic if you can find a rot free one, Ford sorted out the leaky rear window which plagued some XJSs and the last of the AJ6 4.0 was strengthened across the range to handle the XJR's (saloon) supercharging making it practically bullet-proof. I've have loads of Jags - never been let down by one (well, post 80s ones) unlike the (fairly young) Audi 100 I had for a while in the late 90s - nothing but trouble - brake failure (powered brakes) was the final straw and it had to go. Even my 89 XJ40 was totally reliable! I must have stepped in something!

Hmmm. The 944 shared more than a few Audi components - the 924 it was based on was originally going to be a VW. I wonder if the brake failure was exactly the same one? The only Porsche I ever liked was the 928 - oh and the Cayman - finally - a Porsche sports car with the engine in the right place! Although I do have a soft sport for the Cayenne just because of the absurdity of it.
