of course it could be the seals are going it is one of the first signs that it does not go into reverse strait away and also it does not change up as it should until warmed up.

Thanks teddwood1 was hoping it was just the oil but when i saw the slight leak I started to think about the seals but i will still do the oil change first, also has anyone used these oils or heard of someone using them I have two different shops saying they work and they have used them with no problems in Freelander JATCO transmissions.
1: CITGO TRANSGARD Synthetic Blend Multi-Vehicle ATF
2: QMI MULTI-VEHICLE SYNTHETIC ATF

are you in the uk?

Texaco ATF N402 is the original aft sold for our Freelander 1's for use in the Jatco auto.
LR main dealers sell this as LRN402 or part no STC50531 for a 1 litre bottle in the UK. It's still available.
Even though this is an old part I assume if there were any modernisation that LR would have upgraded the aft over the years.
We don't have it's spec, just comparisons of other brands saying they're compatible.
Some years ago I talked via pm with someone who lived on an island near to you who got some shipped over from the main land via fisher men as the LR stuff was said to be banned or not available as it wasn't allowed to be imported or something similar to this.
I can't advise on a compatible oil available in your area so a main dealer may be the best option unless someone else can come up with something.

I've run a standard Dexron 3 synthetic fluid in the Freelander Jatco box without an issue. There's actually nothing particularly special about the Jatco box. I use, without exception Carlube ATF-U. This is a high spec Dexron fluid and is perfectly fine for it. Iirc, in the US market, Dexron fluid was specified anyway due to some banned additive in LR N402.

It's true dextron was used in merkin FL1's but can't remember if ii or iii or other as it's been too many years since. One of the chemicals in LRN402 was banned on import by one of the most polluting countries in the world. The dextron used was said to have damaged many Jatco's in the FL1 and they were trying to join together to take legal action because of this. Don't know if this was successful. There was you tube vid's on the damage and someone flushing theirs with a machine but that seems to have gone too. Hence why very few FL1's eggsist over there from peak sales in 2002 I think. It was a case of when not if it would fail according to what they put on the web. A sneaky bulk import of LR stuff got through and was sold on a par with gold dust. All the merkin sites seem to have gone years ago. mad hat man may recall info. Sadly I don't have a copy. Must be harsh if it was causing trouble. I remember burnt oil pic's and deteriorated rubber but we're talking something like 10 to 12 years ago when it all happened. The info they had was fascinating. They sourced the rave disk for us anorl. Someone on ere recently put the wrong power steering fluid in a beetle which killed the steering. Chemistry uses some nasty tactic's.

The problem sejo_tt will have is getting hold of what we have available over ere in the uk. While some versions of dextron may be ok (never used myself) it's getting hold of it that will be the main problem. An option would be an auto specialist over there who may have access to more data.

Thanks for your informative guidance i will try and get more data on the brands I have available to me here and see what's my best option again thanks.

The US spec Freelander used Dexron 2 as Dexron 3 wasn't available at the time. The LR N402 isn't a magic formula or anything, it's not even synthetic. There was just one banned additive that prohibited it's use.
As to why the US Freelander had box troubles, I don't know but I suspect that lack of maintenance and abuse had something to do with it. I've run Dexron in there without a problem but only really as a cheap flushing fluid. As I said, I exclusively use Carlube ATF-U without any issues at all. I use this, safe in the knowledge that it exceeds anything that LR sell for the gearbox.
I can't see the box coming to any harm with a synthetic Dexron 3 fluid fill.
