My 200Tdi Defender has developed a loud squeaking noise. It is only present when moving and begins after about 15mph and gets louder and quicker when speed is increased. It happens in all gears. When the throttle is lifted or the clutch is depressed the noise goes away, but it does reoccur on the slightest touch of the throttle.

Is it the fan belt. noise will increase with engine revs and may die away when throttle is backed off. just put some grease on the belt and see if noise goes if it does then you can fix the correct way

Trapped guinea pig?

Sorry - not helpful but couldn't resist:doh:

Not sure why throttle would impact, but if speed related I'd check the usual - UJs, wheel bearings just to eliminate

Can't be a fan belt, it only happens when driving in gear, depress the clutch or ease of the throttle and the noise completely disappears. Running the engine when stationary at any revs - no noise, so, must be in the transmission - but how can I narrow it down??

Sounds like the uj's to me, especialy as its a squeeking noise as revs increase.

Thanks Andy Land, you were spot on. Its the rear U/J on front prop. Would it be better to replace both U/J's, only one is defective. Any advice on the replacement part - make and supplier.

IF it anit broke why fit it, .Use good ones, the best you can afford they should last 200,000 miles.

I replaced the front UJ on the front propshaft first, then 50miles later my rear UJ on the front propshaft went...could have just been coincidence tho.

I was advised to use GKN Hardy Spicer ones, which cost about £6.50 from Paddocks :)

Hi fella ... what JW says really, get the best you can afford. I just bought a whole prop assembly with UJ's for £65 from MM4x4 which is much quicker and easier than fiddling with UJ's. If you just change one then chances are the other will go soon. So, if the money is ok, new prop and make sure you get one with grease nipples. One does the sliding joint and then one on each end for the UJ's. Letting them dry out is the quickest way to a failed part.
Good luck buddy :)
