Hi all
Today whilst driving home from work car started to shudder, stall, pulled over to see what was going on but then decided to find a better spot (safer) put into drive nothing happened except for rev counter moved
Went through the gears still nothing tried again and it engaged anyhow pulled over got out to find transmission fluid all over the right wheel well and running board nanocom says converter lockup any ideas where I should start or if this is likely to be too big a job for a limited diy'er
A any ideas would be appreciated as always

Hi ok I have had a look underneath and the cooler hoses are fine but I can't see where it is leaking from I know the torque converter (basically) is like a fan that pushes the fluid around the transmission how would I check this for damage do I have to take the transmission down completely or can I just check the converter in situ thanks for all and any advice

Occurs to me there is a breather hose on the manual so assume there is one on the auto. It has a banjo joint with 2 copper washers. Could it be the breather is leaking?

Hi cooler pipes look fine but car is making a loud grinding noise as well I will have to get it cleaned off and report back
Sound as if it may be the torque converter has failed, the grinding noise would be the internals, (runner and stator), coming together and producing lots of nasty little filings that will be circulation within the transmission oil circuit.
Unfortunately a tranny out job.

Hi thanks I was thinking having listened to the sound it makes that with the fluid leak maybe the welds have gone on the converter as well so time for her to go out of my depth now and can't afford to get it done by someone else but great car though cheers all

Thanks for the replies about this but does anybody have a rough guesstimate as to what the cost could likely be to have this corrected
Thanks for your help

Quite a lot of labour. Would have thought maybe £500 for labour alone but you might get lucky. You could try ringing Ashcrofts near Dunstable and see what they think? Or there's a guy near Stokenchurch called Ian Prior (FW 4x4) who is supposed to be decent but I've never used him myself. Both a bit of a drive from the south of the county.

I've not had the box off on an auto but cannot believe it is that much different from the manual? It is daunting as there is a lot to remove but it is all in RAVE. Hardest thing is lowering the box. BrianDSE used a motorbike jack with wood to wedge it and hold it flat. Seems like the best method for the home mechanic.

Don't forget to do a risk assessment first & when that tells you what you already know check ambulance response times in your area

The HP24 box is much larger and heavier than the R380, and with the transfer box as well it is a big lump to play with.

Find an auto box specialist who works on ZF stuff if you can't find a Landie independent.
