Transfer gear lever problem

I used my N reg Defender 90 on grass with some incline work recently. I used the low range for about 15 minutes and used the diff lock for the first time to get going on a steep bit. It was in use for less than a minute. I later went back into high range with no problem.
All seemed well until next time I used the vehicle. When I tried to engage low range the transfer gear lever felt sloppy and does nothing.
I am hoping that this is a simple linkage problem not involving major work. Can anyone guide me please? Can I get at it from inside the vehicle? If so what is the procedure?

Many thanks for any help.

take off the middle seat, unscrew the inspection panel underneath it and inspect ;) .

i would start by simply wiggling the lever and seeing if it is attached to the linkages.....

Thanks Chris,
I will have a look today, hopefully. There is actually a cubby box in the middle but I guess otherwise it is the same.

Ah, Mr Grunt - just the person. On that piccy, where aboots is the difflock warning light switch? I asked this before in my very first post to this forum and you kindly explained where it was, but i've slept since then...

On another topic, thought I was gonna be down Hedon Road Monday and Tuesday next week, but it got rearranged. 2 weeks today I'll be there, so will bring the goods with me ;)

And it's a pure **** tae get to:eek: Had to take me tunnel off (as well as middle seat) to get a better go at it when ah changed mine.

Thanks, know what to look for this weekend. Still got yer phone numbers (i think) if not I'll PM you.

Getting to these wires is going to be interesting, me V8 had a 2" lift, and a custom tunnel (hacked to bits an a bit of ally bent over held in with 4 pop rivets) that was easy to remove...

The tunnels no hard tae take off, maybe 6 or 8 screws. ettin' tae the wires from the middle seat is a pain if ye've got ham fists like me, but can be done;) :D

After a long delay, due to holidays and hospitals, I struggled to remove the cubby box (rusted in screws) and finally got to see my floppy transfer gear lever problem. (Thank you to Chris Mack and to Grunt for the photos)
The component which links the high/low lever to the operating rod has sheared. So a replacement seems straightforward. However, after removing the retaining clip I cannot see how the pin comes out to release the component. It slides so far and then comes up against the main housing.
I feel I am missing something obvious but cannot see how to get round it.
Does anyone know what the trick is please?

Are you talking about the lever housing above the gear box? If you are then you have to remove the housing, take the plate off the left hand side, turn it upside down, take the circlip off the bottom of the gear lever remove the lever and pull the rod out through the hole.

You must have given it a fair bit of humpty to shear it though, are you sure it hasn't just come off its splines. If you've given the lever in the diff lock direction a bit of a hammering an the high low linkage arm thing hasn't been quite tight enough then it can come off its splines.

Do a search for the manual it's on here in a few places an it'll tell you how to set the lever up.

Grunt,
Thanks for the reply. I don't think that you are referring to the faulty component. My fault, I will try to make it clearer:
On your photo with the title "tfer_box.jpg" it is clearly shown to the left of the yellow splodge. It connects the rod which is threaded at the lower end to the cranked lever.
My problem is how to remove the pin which joins the top of the cranked lever to the broken component.
I have removed the clip which is on the outer end of the pin (i.e. nearer the camera) but cannot push it through because it stops when it hits the main housing.
If all else fails I thought that I might saw through the pin and put a new one in from the outer end and put the clip on the inner end. Does that sound stupid?

I was surprised to find the fracture. I do not remember being rough with the transfer gear lever and did not even know it had happened until next time I went to use low range.
Thanks again for any further advice.

PS I have the manual but cannot find any detail on this. What page are you referring to.
Also, is there anywhere which shows part numbers?

The top of the selector housing comes of and goes back on easily enough only six bolts, so you could take the whole assembly off, but I spose you could saw through the pin if you thought it easier. I put my pin in the other way round but you have to make sure the end doesn't foul the gearbox casing.

Thanks for that information. I eventually had to saw through the clevis pin. Two bolts were proving very stubborn so I opted not to damage the heads.
Parts now on order.
Interestingly, the parts drawing at the dealers showed the pin the other way round. So I expect clearance will not be a problem.
Thanks again.
