Transfer box whine

yeh sorry engine dip stick not the gear box one altho i think the leak is from the gearbox coolant bit by the rad, i don't want to drive it at the moment encase i damage the engine :(
 
Taste it....

Bitter is battery acid
Bitter Sweet is Coolant
Soapy is Washer Fluid
Oily/carbony Engine Oil
Sweet/charry/bitter/oily is ATF or PS fluid...

Colour
Clear -water
Bluey water -washer fluid
Greeny/bluey or red water is coolant
Straw/Dark - Engine Oil
Red/burnt ocre - ATF or PS Fluid
 
seems like i'm having none stop problems with this range rover. after i drain it and try and flush all the metal out what should i be looking for?
 
the leak is like a very light brown clear oil, dont know if i fancy putting it in my mouth though, i felt it between my fingers and smelt it and can only take an educated guess at engine oil.
 
engine seems to run fine, as far as i'm aware,although it could be under powered as my cousin also has a p38 of the same year and is a lot faster than mine. but other than that i think the engine is ok, no untoward noises (that i can hear over the transfer box wine), doesnt use excessive amounts of water or anything like that.
 
have you tried running it up with t/box in neutral ,g/boxes have epicylic gear sets that can whine ,with eng depends on what filings are iron ,ali etc
 
yeh tried it in neutral but no change in the whine, i'm hoping it's the transfer box input/output bearings rather than something inside the t/box.
The filings look ali but cant be 100% sure
 
ah i see, no i havent tried this but i only get the whine while the car is moving. do i understand correctly that with the transfer box in neutral i wont get drive?

Apologies if i'm sounding like an idiot but im new to the range rover scene.

If the transfer box shift motor is duff, I suppose it's possible that the gears for High Range are not fully engaged, that might make the transfer box whine and will certainly knacker it:eek:
