Well, after the rigmarole of removing the bl**dy thing I've now come to disassemble it and I think I've found the culprit of the loud 'CLUNK' going forward to reverse and back :confused::confused:. Now I'm no expert in these matters and have strictly followed the LT230 rebuild manual. I checked the Mainshaft input gear & splines and mine was the cross drilled one which really disappointed me as I thought this was the cause. The gear was tight and there was a lot of beef on the splines and no wear whatsoever :(:(:(.

So on I went removed both front and rear output housings & then the differential assembly and came by accident to look at the hub & sleeve assembly. Moving back and forward on the splines was ok but there is quite an amount of play as you turn it and you can hear a clunk as you turn. Could this be the culprit????
I'v put a video on but you can't hear it as well as you can in the flesh, but you can see the play. Is it known for the teeth to wear and result in that play????

Thanks for that raywin, I'm continuing to strip it down to its component parts so I'll bear that in mind, excellent write-up btw, gonna follow that when.....eventually I get to put mine back together. There does seem to be quite a bit of what looks like yellow gungy paste splattered around so it maybe that the brass washers are goosed. Its taking a bit longer than I thought what with family get togethers & working shifts:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes: I can't get a good go at it. :(:(:(

Often the case when you need the time.
Recomend you use good bearings when you re build it I bought the kit from island but I think Chevin do one it's worth spending a bit more.
I also bought new cross shafts for the planet gears it makes the whole thing less sloppy.

Got my kit from Ashcrofts, quick delivery too. Cleaned everything off today with White Spirit and had a closer look, still think its the sleeve. Done another clearer video below, what do ya think??? I'm gonna press the bearings off tomorrow and I think we'll know more then.

It's clear there is some backlash in the dog teeth, which is to be expected, I think it seems a bit more than mine, but I don't think it's too much, James Martin has much more experience, he helped me quite a bit.
More important is the clearance of the gear on the sleeve which it spins on, it needs to spin but not rock on there, Best to pull it right down and assess the whole thing.
Do you have the re man manual for the box? It has some useful information in there.

Might just be me then, get the rest of it stripped and have a proper good look at it then. I don't really know how much is too much or how much is permitted, it just seems loose if ya know what I mean. I've got the manual for the box refurb (off Ashcrofts website) its the Land Rover one. Anyways gotta go to work now.

Ha!!! Trapped a nerve in my neck and not been able to do owt for a week, can't turn me head look up or down feelin really sorry for meself :(:(:(

Well managed to strip it down completely and the dog teeth on the high gear are absolutely knackered. There's bits chewed off quite a few of them and one of them is nearly non-existent. So it seems new high gear time to me, the low gear has hardly any play and the teeth on it show no wear at all.
