I've bought an Ashcroft transfer box and I'm stripping down my old one to move the parts into the new one.
I've reached this point and got stuck. how do I free these shafts from the box? I've removed the big circlip.
Is there a site that gives instructions? The Haynes manual is unhelpful.

under top plate there is a pinch bolt holding fork to shaft ,its easier to build front hosing with shafts etc all installed and then fit to main housing fitting fork on right way round as you do for shaft and gears remove cirlip holding high gear ,youll need to knock the whole shaft toward the rear pushing out rear bearing using copper hammer or similar to hit shaft ,once bearings out of rear you can prise front bearing along shaft and undo circlip ,you need angled external circlip pliers to do it then shaft will slide through gears ,then front outer race behing front circlip can be removed

Thanks James, that's a big help. I suspected I was at the "hit/tap with hammer" stage, but I thought it best to check.

I may have to admit defeat. I've undone all I can and tapped it as hard as I dare with a wooden mallet to no effect.
Looks like S.E. Tranmissions is getting a box of bits and a begging look in the morning.

presumably youve removed speedo housing if you have it will knock rear bearing behind speedo housing out then you can move front bearing on shaft to get at circlip

there isnt a clip on that side ,bearing outer race is held in by speedo housing ,shims alter the amount its pressed in to add a little preload to shaft ,it will need a good whack on the other side on some ,buts thats how it comes to bits

Does anyone have pictures of underside of transferbox and gearbox (while you're down there) Mine looks like it may have a "crease" in it from thrashing about when the gearbox mounts went....or it may be part of the casting...

If and when it's back together again I'll post a pic. But a "crease" sounds out of place.

You need to heat the aluminium to help expand the casting, a hot air gun is good. Also the main output shaft is soft so don't hit the threaded end without the nut on or you may damage the thread and or bend the threaded portion. Tapping the shaft back and forth moves the outer races in the casing. Heat is your friend. Also lever the races from inside of the casing.

All done and back in. Took the transmission shop all week to finish it. They had trouble finding the correct thickness of circlip At least having them do it I know it's (probably) correct.
Half a dozen nuts left over and one large bolt. Curiously worrying.

bet they struggled with front taper bearing it pushes up against circlip on shaft ,a lot of the replacement bearings are too chamfered and allow bearing to push against high gear when speedo housing preloads shaft
