Right guy answers on a postcard. Lol.....

Changing my transfer box on my defender which is a 1.4 ratio for a discovery 1 (1.2) transfer box.

Got the box second hand for £50 note so not to bad. Noticed it had a lot more slack or possibly called back lash in it between front and rear out put shafts. Over quarter of a turn. And the front out put shaft bearing was noisy.

So have stripped the transfer box and removed the front output shaft and much investigation later have noticed all the slack or back lash is in this part pictured below.

My questions gents is....
1 is this normal to have that amount of back lash between the front and rear output shafts
2 is the part pictured below worn?..
3 any idea where I can get that part from. I have found the bearing and seal but not the shaft part with the teeth on it , or the ring that goes around it.

Cheers guys.

diff lock collar is a loose fit over splines and output doig teeth to enable you to engage and disengage on the move , excessive play between both outputs will be center diff gears / shafts, a good diff should feel slightly tight and notchy but generally they all have variable amounts of play ,not necessarily anything to worry about until its very noticeable, you test play between both shafts when diff lock is not engaged

Cool ok
So the part above could be fine. It just seamed the only part when the box was all together that had the play in it. Over quarter of a turn before the rear one would turn. But as it took up the slack it made a large clunk. Will have another look and the other gears I think.
Cheers

as said its in the center diff if your counter rotating both outputs at the same time , there will be some play in the box gears , you could drop sump plate and check for end float

Little update been cleaning up the transfer box and fitting new bearings etc and seals today. Had a complete nightmare getting the old 1.4 ration box out due to rounded off bolts and access issues but with help from my brother got there in the end.

Can anyone help.

I have noticed that between the handbrake drum.( big round black bit) and the casting of the transfer box is a modern sort of black female plug. I'm guessing this could be electronic speedo?? Seams to be near where the cable type speedo would bolt in. Am I right with this?...
I didn't get a picture of it today but I'm guessing that my cable speedo will still fit?...
Cheers

if you swap to cable speedo from transducer type you need to prise out speedo housing and swap the drive, hitting the head of bolts helps loosen them and swells the head so socket fits tighter

Cool. Ok.
So it's a case of swapping what's on my 1.4 box over to the discovery 1.2 box.( speedo bits I mean) lol.
