Transfer Box Bottom Plate Seal

Newbie question on a 2.5NA 110... For years the gasket around the bottom plate on my transfer box had been leaking, badly when hot, so last year I replaced it with some Land Rover gasket in a tube. Still leaks. Still drips when really hot. Going to put a cork gasket back on - but should I seal that with something first - or just fit it dry ? And do the bolt threads need any sealant applying when they go back in ?

Hi mate, sorry I cant help ya answer the question however mines doing the same....... Only mine is leaking from the actual bloody bolts! My gasket is dry but i have bobbles of oil on the end of a few bolts where its dripping from!!!

Iv tightened them right up but still leak, so all i do now is keep me eye on the levels!

For best results skim over both of the metal surfaces with a piece of emory cloth or fine wet and dry paper in order to clean up the surface and remove any high spots or traces of old cork / silicone gasket. Next apply an adequate layer of 'hylomar', or similar high temperature silicone sealant to both of the metallic surfaces. In this case, apply a bead to the the underside of the transfer box casing, then push your cork gasket onto that so that the silicone holds it in place. Next, apply a bead of silicone to the bottom plate, push it up against the cork gasket and bolt it on tight, ensuring that the cork gasket does not slip away from the outside edge of the two surfaces. Finally, apply gentle heat (with a hair drier) around the seal in order to help the silicone set. Leave it for at least 30 minutes before driving. That should do it!

Just reminded me of yet another job needs doing

Pos you forgot to say refill the transfer box with oil .

But dont over tighten the plate bolts as you can deform the plate around the bolt holes and make it leak even more ...

Torque em up to 22-28 Nm or 16-21 lbs ft

Mine does the same. Tried copper washers but it still leaks. In fact when I took one bolt out to fit a washer the stuff poured out...! Hence the question about putting something on the bolt threads as well...?

I'm also having the same problem. I replaced the gasket and used a good sealant.
But still getting leaks, around the bolts...

Try applying some threadlock to the bolts. It might just seal them up.
