I was under my 1990 3.9 v8 classic recently and I noticed that on the pipe to the auto transmission cooler right up at the front there is some rubber pipe over the metal pipe with about four Jubelee clips on it and it is weeping fluid very slightly.

Is there supposed to be join here?, as no where else on the metal looks rusty or damaged.

To replace it to stop it leaking what exact type and size of rubber hose do I need ?, presumably this gets worked pretty hard when towing in hot weather.

Do I need to bleed it after the repair? how do I prevent major ATF loss whilst working?

Any help greatly appeciated as I am loathed to touch bodged repairs like this incase it causes other problems.

Com on guys , one of you classic owners must have looked under there!

HEY! its Sunday and i'm only on here because no good film and no F1

Obviously a repair. If it's the transmission fluid leaking you gearbox will run dry and that can be expensive. Check the level of your gearbox first. I would look at the manual and decide on buying new pipe or replacing the rubber tube which will be cheeper just make sure it a good fit and no leaks, use new fasteners. Take it is an Auto

Yeah its an auto , but I need to get the type of hose right and also find out if there should be a rubber hose there

Your local parts shop should have different rubber tube, get thick walled - actually why not take off the stuff on the car and get new replacement high pressure hose and correct size fasteners. The original was a rubber (high pressure) hose and connectors bit like a hydrolic (sorry for the spelling but the sun has gone over the yardarm) pipe. If you worried about it pop to a local farmers or JCB pipe repair place and have them make you one up, had lots made that way and not to pricy as they are repairing hydraulic stuff all the time. Even used them on the air/con and no probs. Classics are fantastic and my favourite - in fact I have decided that come the spring I am goind to strip my 93 LSE down and do a nuts and bold rebuild. Have had seven Classics so far and every one was a joy. Give them some attention, look after them and they will bring a smile to your face. What a car!
Buy the way the LSE I have was a 100 pound find. It was burnt out after having a fire in the heater unit but she is running again with a replacement interior from one of my old classics I had to break because of rott.

Heya Fet.

Just been out and had at look at me 89 classic (90 model) ok. There are 2 pipes running from the box. they run down the side of the block/sump. The lower has a union connection about 3 inches from the rubber hose. This one runs to the top of the rad. The upper pipe is a crimp type join (non repairable by DIY) in about the same place as the lower pipe. This runs to the lower part of the rad. There is a sensor of some description at the rad end of the hose where it goes back to metal.

No jubbly clips are used. So I would say someone has bodged it up at some point. Have a look on fleabay for someone breaking a 90 classic or try a factors (possibly expensive).

Just noticed that my engine is bleeding badly. Not good.

NOt sure on bleeding. Other times I have worked on auto boxes I just drained the fluid out and re filled with new fluid. Makes life that much easier.

Thanks mate , really appreciate you looking. So the bit of rubber hose you have got, is it under the oil cooler itself about in the middle?

I dont want to drain it all down as I have just had all that drama with the autobox.

Wheres yours leaking?

The rubber hose is about a foot long, from the end of the engine block area up to the pipes coming from the rad cooler. they stop right at the bottom, just over the chassis rail.

Think mine is leaking from the right hand rocker or head gaskets. it's coming off the road at the end of the week though.

Going to recon the chassis and axles. Need to replace rear cross member and steering box aswell.

I can take some pics tomorrow for you of the pipes if you need.

Some pics would be great as I am going to look at a scrapper on saturday for a spare autobox and will try and get the oil cooler pipes too if they havent been cut off, but hes charging so I dont want to get them if I dont need it.

Whats leaking on yours ?, it will be the rocker cover gasket if its oil I would have thought and head gasket if its watery gunge.

Where are you based?, I wouldnt mind seeing how you get the body off. I really struggled to do the underneath of mine with it on but its going to have to do for now as the list of jobs doneit too long!

looking for someone to help me with a trans cooler replacement. Ive had two used ones and ech time they were attempted to be put on one of the pieces that's attached to the cooler comes off and cant go back on. the junk yard indicated that that piece is suppose to stay on the car i need help

Fook me thats going back a bit lol, I had the autobox rebuilt and fitted by a specailist in the end and they did the cooler too, they left the pipes alone as they looked pretty ropey and there is no access, they havnt leaked yet though.
