2005 Vogue TD6 - gearbox replaced last year, battery replaced last month, 'Trans Failsafe Prog' Message appeared today whilst driving - no other clues. Pulled over when it was safe, turned off engine, removed key, checked message centre 'check control ok'. Due for service this month, can anyone give me an idea of what to do next? I'm based in SW France. Thanks.

cant be gearbox gone again -

get it plugged into diagnostics at the garage - that will tell you the cause

i had that come up once - it was due to a bad battery - all sorts of errors come up with low battery power

Thanks Hippo - I bought a new battery last month, can they be unreliable when new? Also, hope this is unrelated.. when I hit 80kmph, there is a low 'buzz' or hum that seems to come from near the windscreen wipers, any thoughts on that?

Thanks for your help.

New batteries can indeed be duff, especially if they are on the small side for the job.

I've done a few of these L322 gearbox's.

I've been watching one that had a rebuilt gearbox last year, after trans fail safe message appeared & all gears lost.

However, this winter the trans fail safe message kept appearing, gearbox still behaved correctly, but due to the wipers on, heaters on, headlights on, i put this particular fault down to the battery.

It could just be on your's, as Datatek already said, you need a good heavy duty battery, one slightly more powerful than you already have.

Is the buzz wind noise?? I have the same problem, I put it down to a slightly flappy skuttle panel just over where the battery sits.

Mine also flashed transfailsafe. This was because my battery went dead. Got the ecu reset and all is good

The buzz is from the plastic trim at the bottom of the windscreen.
Trans failsafe can also be put up by the transfer box ecu,I had one in a couple of weeks back where the transfer box change mototr feedback pot was faulty. This resulted in the ecu not being able to tell either the engine nor gearbox ecu what range it was in.
Best to get a diagnostic check done, get whoever does it to look in all related ecu's,trying to build a picture of whats going wrong - AND to make sense of it.(Not always easy)

Thanks everyone. Reassured about the buzz at 80kph.
If I buy diagnostics software, where do I start? Is there anything you'd recommend and anyone that you'd recommend to talk me through it? I'm in the middle of nowhere, SW France. Thanks!

Does Low Range gears & sport/manual button work?

The cheapest diagnostic option for the L322 is Allcomms from www.rswsolutions.com You can read the fault codes on all ECU's with it.:)
The Rolls Royce of diagnostics is Faultmate MSV 2 from
www.blackbox-solutions.com pricey for the L322 but the best there is.:):)

Thank you Datatek, had the same error message today, had all been clear for a week & control check ok. Message cleared today after turning the engine off and no other symptoms..

I get this error message from time to time. Main Stealers advised that I needed a new transfer box at a cost of £1500

Turns out it's a dodgy switch on or around the gear stick.

What I do is, with the engine off but ignition on, move it from park to drive and back a few times. Clears the fault all the time for me.
