Had a bit of a disaster yesterday. I had to go just a few miles to collect a shed on trailer. Trailer is very old farm trailer but not totally rotten, been in use for years. It had a leaky wheel so I put another wheel on which didn't QUITE fit snug, so i put 4 washers behind the wheel (between hub and wheel) so I could crank it up tight.
On way back home the damn wheel came off! All four wheel bolts gone, and wheel went in the ditch.
I jacked it up with Disco jack, got the wheel and found two bolts in the grass. I put them in and they screwed in seemingly normally which surprised me after they had clearly found their way out all at the same time! I had to stop every 100 yards to retighten as they kept working loose.
I have new wheels for the trailer coming, the proper size etc, 10".
I am now just wondering whether the hubs need replacing. I really can't see any easy way to do it without a new axle as well and all in it will be hundreds which I dont have. The hubs look good, gonna do the bearings while I have the trailer in the yard.
My question is.... if the bolts came out, will they hold the new wheel in on that side? They screw in fine, although VERY slight wobble after 4 turns, whereas on the other side (other hub), they feel a tiny bit tighter after 4 turns.
Thanks for any thoughts!
